    Timing kit Question

Well ive just had issues with a new timing kit after 500kms but thats not my concern. I was fortunate enough to have been given a timing kit when mine failed on the way to blinman.
The question i have is what is the current tensioner pulley and idler.
I was supplied a metal non lipped idler and tensioner on first kit and told this is the upgrade. However i was given a plastic lipped idler and metal tensioner when mine failed.
I had to replace the kit and was told the plastic lipped tensioner with metal idler
is the most up to date kit.
Both kits came with a lipped crank gear.
This really is frustrating as which supplier is correct both state that their kit is current.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

from memory theres 2 styles of "updated" kit

one has the plate on the crank pully welded on rather than just tacked and this is to address the problem of the guide coming off and letting the belt drift

the next kit adds guides to the tensioner as well.

but its been a while since I bought a replacement kit for a Tdi. Im sure JC will be along shortly.

    Hi Shano,

All the current kits I get, part number STC 4096 are supplied with steel non lipped tensioner and idler (the tensioner is converted from the old lipped type and has a hex head bolt to tighten it with, not the long bolt and slotted washer), and a 1 piece powder metallurgy type of crank gear. (AFAIR the plastic lipped tensioner is for 200Tdi only, as they have no lipped crank gear. There is no upgrade 'kit' for the 200Tdi, and the defender 200tdi has no idler, only a tensioner.)
