    130 rear wheel bearing adjustment help

    Hi All

    After spending the last few weeks trying to work out the knocking sound from the rear of my Defender 130, I now realise the rear wheel bearing are loose.

    The previous owner had replaced the bearings themselves, which concerns me a bit.

    Is there any trick to adjusting them? I have the workshop manual that outlines the torque settings and procedure.

    Do I need to replace the gasket between the drive flange and axle housing? The gaskets and drive flanges are brand new.

    Some don't even use the gasket on the drive flange but use stag paste or other gasket forming compounds.

    There are some good posts if you search for "wheel bearings" and most do it by hand.

    If you follow the book procedures you should have no problems. Give the wheel a few spins between to make sure the bearings are seated properly. Use a new lockwasher.

    After adjusting the bearing, when you think you have finished and before fitting the drive flange, make sure the wheel spins freely and has no appreciable free play - give it a good hard wiggle.

    After completing the job, go for a drive of at least 10km, avoiding use of the brakes, and check that none of the hubs are more than slightly warm. Then jack up the affected wheel(s) and check that no play has developed.

    quite often you can reuse the gasket and i normally use the lock washers twice

    no real need to torque the nuts up

    are you northside or southside?

    Adjusting the bearings is simple...

    Before you start, you'll need the paper flange gasket & a lock washer. (Some fresh grease & thread lock is useful too.)

    • Get the flange off & remove the nuts.
    • If needed, squirt some grease in there!
    • Get the washer & first nut on there.
    • Tighten by hand, spin the wheel to seat everything down and then tighten with the spanner (but not too tight).
    • Back off the nut by 1/8th of a turn and make sure that the wheel spins freely.
    • Pop the lock washer on, the second nut, tighten it all up and re-assemble.

    Is this a Td5 130? Cause I think the TD5's bearings are non adjustable unless they hub has been rebuilt to pre TD5 specs.

    it's a 300Tdi

    I now have new lock washers, so I am going to get stuck into it today.

    I am on the Southeast side...Gumdale

    Just about to leave work and get stuck into the Defender... I plan on doing heaps of little jobs this weekend including:

    Adjust rear wheel bearings
    Fix annoying rattles in rear sliding glass
    renew fuel filter and clean out water trap
    clean engine breather filter
    Mount highlift jack behind rear seat
    Fab up a 15mm spring spacer for my rear LH spring that has sagged. EFS won't warrant it and I am not prepared to fork out for new springs at this stage.
