Rear recovery point on Puma with no towbar

I've read a few threads about recovery points (Scallops front points look the business), but my query is about bolting on one of these type of hitch points:

Straight onto the standard rear cross member. There are 4 threaded bolt holes which look like a universal size to take a hitch like this.

Am I in danger of ripping out my rear cross-member (using a snatch strap recovery) if I just bolt one on without having a tow-bar assembly or any thing else back there?

    Thanks
    David

ps. Scallops - if you read this, can you tell me if you had to drill your chassis to put on your front recovery hooks. I looked at my chassis, and I can't see where the bolts would go through....

I personally wouldn't bolt anything to the rear cross member unless you put a big spreading plate behind it to spread out the load as I don't think the rear cross members are that strong.

They can get fatigued from a wheel carrier being attached to it so I would hate to see a few snatch recoverys off one..

I don't know this for fact about it being weak its just my opinion
Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......

When you have a look at the Hayman Reese hitches they are not only bolted to the rear cross member but they are braced back to the chassis rails as well. So I think DB is on the money here, probably not such a good idea

OK. Looks like I need something more substantial then.

What are the threaded holes on the rear cross-member meant for then? Is it for a LR towbar (in conjunction with other bracketing etc)?

Where can get them from? Are they an ARB/TJM sort of thing, or import from the UK type of thing?

I am going out playing in the sand nextweekend, so I'd like something by Friday!!

they will be for the drop down plate for the tow bar as is more common in the uk giving the defender its traditional plough for off roading.

food for thought, when the army were runing SIII's, after a while a tech update was sent through military circles regarding details on how to manufacture and fit a set of reinforcing plates to the rear crossmember to cope with the stresses of towing with the pintle hook that was normally simply bolted to the rear crossmember

MuddyMech just PM'd me suggesting Karcraft might be able to supply Jate rings, so I have sent off an email quote request. Will see if that turns up anything useful.

I also found this useful info on tensile strengths in different sized bolts:
    http://www.landroverclub.za.org/vehi...ery_points.htm

Looks like the rear Jate rings on the standard chassis are not suitable for much at all! Rated at 340Kgs only
