When I bought my Discovery II back in 1999, right from the onset of delivery, there was a vibration in the driveline.
Turns out that the rear driveshaft was out of balance from the factory, which lead to a vibration between 90-100 km/hr.
Got that replaced, and all was smooth again. That was until I had to drive to Sydney on the Hume. Then a different vibration emerged at 130 km/hr
Turns out that this was the front propshaft, also out of balance. Got that replaced under warranty as well and all is smooth again.
So brand new out of the factory, both propshafts were not properly balanced.
It's a simple enough test - take one propshaft out, lock CDL and go for a drive. If the vibes go away, then it's the likely culprit. Trouble starts when you've isolated both driveshafts and neither were the cause of the problem. Then it's likely to be the handbrake drum. I have a TSB on how to test the handbrake drum for vibration but it is for the Disco II.
Here it is attached. I would imagine that since the Defender has the same drum brake arrangement, this would be very similar to a Discovery....
The PDF document does go into a LOT of detail on what the service technicians need to do, and obviously was written as a response to perhaps numerous dealer support calls back to HQ.
Ooops! File is 1.3MB and exceeds the 900Kb file attachment limit from AULRO.
;)
If you are interested, I can email it to you but pls PM me with your email address.
I'd like to go for a ride with you sometime :o.
Hi Allan, did you get Brabragellos to do a wheel balance for you? I only ask because I had a vibration problem with my 110, (lots of shake on the gear stick), and asked Brabragellos to do a wheel balance.
When I got the car back it was much worse, and went throught the "what the **** is wrong with this piece of **** now!" on the way home, however when I did get home I noticed there were no wheel weights on any of my wheels.
After taking the car to a real tyre shop and having the wheels balanced correctly all the shaking dissapeared.
Tim
Im hearing all this and chringing
I took my 130 Puma to Barbagallos to get a ticking noise in the rear looked at as I thought it may be under warranty last week
They had the car for the day and couldnt find it (god only knows if they actually looked)
I got my home trained service crew that work on my racer 110 to have a look. Turns out one of the rear discs on the back had a nick out of it that was rubbing on the caliper. 10mins and a grinder and we were done.
I dont know that there are any "experts" at the dealers at all
Once warranty runs out mine I wont be going anywhere near the dealers in Perth
I use to really want one of these new defenders!
But from all i have heard they have too many troubles. I would probably go with the JK Rubicon.
Hell bad typing error. Almost as bad as vehicle purchase error
