My 09 Puma now has 20000k's up. It has had the standard vac pump warranty change at 10000km and a rear diff pinion oil seal change (also under warranty). Otherwise performs very nicely.
Today about 20 secs after a cold start (still in 3rd gear) the engine coughed and seemed to miss a few beats plus seemed to "diesel" quite loudly for about 5 secs. The amber "malfunction indicator lamp" came on and I pulled over and shut down. After 20 secs I started up no problem and drove the 20km home with no problems evident. However the amber light stayed on.
Anyone had anything similar?
I am in Newcastle so nearest dealer is in Sydney.
Now that Alto has shut here does anyone know if there is a CPU diagnostic unit for the Puma available in Newcastle?

This sounds like the noise a lot of owners are experiencing. Dullbird has posted an extensive thread on here somewhere. Seems to be no fix yet.
It is most probably not a major issue. We have become a little paranoid since Dullbird and Muddymech's unfortunate and real experience with theirs
Maybe just some damp in the fuel system...cold humid weather. The fuel pressure sensor on the fuel rail may have had a hiccup.
Happened to mine under similar circumstances.
I've heard that the light will go out after a short while.
I also read that undoing the sensor on the rail (there is a yellow release button on it) and giving it a wipe with a dry cloth might help.
Reading the fault code will probably only confirm that the sensor has picked up a fault.

It usually takes 3 driving "cycles" to clear a fault, so long as the fault itself is no longer present. I'd still give your dealer and LR assist a call though.

I have just followed Mahn's tip re the sensor (except it did not appear to be a sensor)and the engine light cleared immediately.
At the rear end of the common rail there is what could be an over pressure relief valve. Attached to that is a small-bore plastic pipe with a red quick release clip. I pulled it off and it dumped about 1 cc of diesel. My guess (and I am hoping someone can provide some real knowledge) is that the over-pressure valve lifted briefly and that the released diesel is sitting on the sensor keeping the light on.
Any better ideas?

Something seems to have worked.
I think of this as being a cross between reading a goat's entrails and bush mechanics with a dealer as our witch doctor not knowing much more but having a gadget.
There must be a rational explanation.

We had a similar thing over a year ago with ours on a cold morning, I pulled 3rd gear too early, rattle rattle thump thump, little amber lightand as TimNZ said after about three drives it went away. I took it to LR anyway and with their little magic tool they decided it was a sticky EGR valve? They swapped it under warrenty, never had the problem again
