    Exclamation Best Motor For Travel

Gday ... once again , now i've joined i have lots of questions and i hope there is lots of answers out there for me

So ive done properly too much research and wanted a TD5 motor ... but i want to do Outback QLD , Go back to Robe SA and Through the Middle Of This Beatuiful Country of ours ( Brisbane to Perth Basically lol)

So Td5 has computers ... so im abit scared of that ... 300TDi is slower but .. i can go thur water crossing up the Cape ( another trip planned also Flinders lol) and not worry ... and ive heard that its better on fuel than the Td5 ...

So maybe ive just answered my own question? ...

I have good mech mind and ppl with me on the trips are TQ Mechs and hobby Mech so they know what they are doing.

i know this is basically asking 300TDi vs Td5 ... but i just need to know

I Currently Have a V8 .. and i dont really want to take it around Australia lol

Btw i will be getting a Defender ...

Part B ... Are there less Computers on the TD5 Defender then Discos?

Its A Big Question and i hope you all can help me out

Thank you very much ( in advance )

As for the performance i dont know how i stuck with the Tdi for so long now that i own a Td5 one does not have to ring its neck as much as a Tdi

Ive owned both in 110 Defender station wagons Tdi and Td5 and ill stick my neck out and say the Td5 is a far superior engine , I wouldnt think twice at the depth of water id enter in either dont be scared of computers they are here to stay
As for economy the Td5 and Tdi in the wagons are on a par both pretty much the same but the Td5 has the ability to do better than a Tdi

in South Africa when the TD5 came out they said no way and kept getting the 300TDI motor in there trucks but after a few years now they do run the TD5 as every one knows the little trick for them and how to look after them now, the UK army use TD5's and they would get a punishing. Just become familiar with the elec system and it's mainly the injector harness gets oil in it and ask the other guys what they have done with the computor so they can taking it swiming.

    td5 is a lot quieter............
diagnostics like the nanocom are out there and do work.........

    .............but it is your choice.

    No they don't.

Id go for the TD5 and spend a bit of time understanding it before you go.

The TD5 has been around for a few years now. Once I would never have considered one. But I think I would now. I spoke to BOR about them who said they have proved to be a good reliable motor with a couple of known issues.

I agree with Pat by the best vehicle you can find. A TD5 might have had a harder short life than a looked after older tdi.

I've basically just gone through this process and bought a TD5 110 to do similar trip ... but without any backup I went for the best vehicle for the budget.

It means I've paid waaaaaaaay over market price for a fender, but it's been through the ringer and then been upgraded with all the good bits. I'm in a rush (as ever) so don't want to go through the rigmarole of doing the upgrades myself. Sure it will be a compromise, but the easy life is boring ... isn't it?

Td5's are a top motor. 220,000kms on mine still going strong. I'd trust mine, and my familys life on it any day. Service it well and don't abuse it(too much)

I've got a 300Tdi, that's what I preffer and that's what I'd go for. But if you do go for a TD5, I noticed that Exloz (site sponsor) have a box that fits under the centre cubby for relocating all the ECU stuff. That gives you a safer place for the ECU, a more ergonomic height for the cubby, and extra storage under the drivers seat.

    Ex-Box

Move all your car's electronic gear from under the driver's seat under the Cubby Box and at the same time lift the Cubby Box to a comfortable height for resting your arm on it.
Depending on your Defender model it also gives you heaps of additional storage space.

We designed the Ex-Box to fit all Defenders, Counties etc.
Customer comment: "I am impressed with the well thought out Ex-Box and the instrutions are straight forward."
No drilling necessary, the Ex-Box is installed using existing fittings. Detailed instructions are supplied.
    Price: $250
