Ok, Test 1, as I drove out this morning: unlocked the doors using the fob, then chucked it into the passenger seat, inserted the key, pre-heat, turned to start ... and the old girl came alive without complaint :o
Tomorrow I'll unlock the doors with the key (I know the alarm will go off) and see what can be done without the fob altogether...
When I picked my 110 up I asked for the "EKA" code, they got it to me eventually, but had to email LRUK to get it.

If I left the keys in the ignition sometimes the immobilizer would activate and would have to lock and then unlock the vehicle with the fob before I could restart. A real pain when stopping and starting around the farm and no need to lock up.
The dealer disabled the immobilzer and alarm so no more problems that I may be stranded with a faulty remote. Just have to worry about being stolen:o
I have a security code for the radio which I have used, I assumned that the ignition used the same code??
Well it's been confirmed there is an EKA code. It would appear to be buried in the dealer's IDS computer screens somewhere.
If anyone with a Blackbox Solutions' Faultmate or RovaCom and a Puma can have a look at the Lucas 10AS module pages this would help sort out something, as I suspect that the Blackbox software will display the EKA for the alarm ECU.

After reading my handbook I contacted the dealer by phone and was given the emergency 4 digit code with no fuss at all. Maybe it is a regional thing but if you have an alarm I would definately look for the code.
Regarding the vehicle not starting without the alarm fob being in close proximity to the key-this is not unique to the Defender. I drive a light commercial vehicle at work which has a combined key/fob i.e. all one unit. It is not possible to get a key cut to size and use it. The combined unit is necessary. Before I always got a spare key cut but not any more. The whole unit must be purchased.
