its purpose in life is an installation aid and to retain the rod when you pull the slave cylinder off. If you can get the clutch rod to stay in place without it you're laughing.
If you do want to use something else dont use a wire use a plastic item like a zip tie, In the field I use a pair, one around the fork and one around the arm and yes that setup can be done through the clutch slave hole if you drop the exhaust.
the same goes for the plastic pins that hold the the throw out bearing to the fork.
