I'm with the others on this... It doesn't sound like a clutch to me.

Stick it in gear, engage diff lock and crank the engine...

 If it moves, it's a knackered shaft/diff.
If it doesn't move, it's a knackered gearbox (probably the input or output shaft).

		the verdict is bad...very bad....

Broken main shaft just behind 5th gear....and the broken piece has flogged out the bearings in the transfer.....

So i am up for a gearbox and transfer case rebuild.

 Approximately $3 - 4,000....

not sure whether what to do now...any advice apart from buy a lotto ticket for tonight?

 Cheers

 Andrew

Definately a new gearbox and transfer case...made of gold!

Similar to what happened to me a few years ago.

Just pulling out of a very busy junction in Central London (Hyde Park Corner), complete loss of drive, leaving me stranded in the middle of the road (causing traffic chaos :D).

Once everything was dismantled, we found that the gearbox output shaft had sheered clean off at the point where it passes through the casing. Fortunately, it didn't damage the bearings and as it was a fairly new gearbox from Ashcrofts, they replaced it FoC. (They reckoned that it was a manufacturing fault in the shaft).

No chance of FOC for me....

Very disappointing...never had this happen to any car I have owned before...

I have been told that traveling in 5th gear under loadd is not good and can cause the main shaft to sheer over time.

Maybe selling my Rangie was a bad thing??

Which suffix is the box? The later suffixes are stronger. If it was me I would be buying a SH late suffix box and t-case. Should be about half the price of a rebuild.

It's a 1998 model...are they classed as late Suffix boxes???

I have checked Ashcrofts and would be great to get one, but I think the freight costs would far outway the cost of the actual gearbox.
