    Oh no....no Clutch!!!

Well....it's been a very trying day.

Driving back from Ipswich today and all of sudden there is shudder and no drive....great...pull over to the side and the car won't move no matter what gear I try, There is just nothing there when I release the clutch.

Looks like the clutch has crapped itself..

So after waiting 2 hours for a flat top, the car is now at the mechanics and I am just waiting for the quote

I have this feeling that next week is going to be expensive...

it could be the clutch, but I am afraid gearbox is more likely. Also, have you checked that it is not a stripped drive flange on one wheel? This would be the best problem to have because it would be far easier and cheaper to fix - if a back wheel, you don't even have to jack it up. Easy to check - just engage the diff lock, and it will drive if that is the problem.

To check whether it is the clutch or gearbox, remove the PTO cover on the rear of the transfer case. There is a slight chance that you have a broken mainshaft, which will cause it to look as if it is the clutch, but the box will have to come out anyway for that.

mmm i would be looking other places first. Did you try to drive in Diff lock as there are soo many things that can break in the axels that will cause it not to go. Also the gearbox would not just let go but start to make noise or feel a bit crap for a bit of time first.

I have had a few clutches go on me over the years and they tend to make it so you can push the pedal down . Feels like someone put a bit of 4 x 2 under the pedal. Goes half way done then rock hard . But i could still drive it . In fact drove it 200 miles like that .

I would not jump on the gearbox just yet as said check the axels first, somthing stupid like it fell out of High box and into Netural. That would give you the systems you have there. And belive me i have seen it done many a time. Last one i saw was a Rangie on the back of a low loader from Sctoland to Southampton. (One end to the other of the UK). Because the RAc man said the gearbox was Nackered only for the mencahic at the landy garage to put it into H box and drive it of the low loader. The look on the blokes face was rather speacial

    Axles and diffs all ok.

Tried to drive using all combination of gears. It's as though there is no gearbox there at all.

Previously I had a noisy throwout bearing, but I can not hear it now, that is why I think there is something wrong with the clutch. I will look at it more on Monday....

At the moment I am trying to drive around in my wifes Rav 4 with all my tools in the back....not fun.

    Cheers

I would check the master cltuch cylinder, then the slave cylinder. And make sure there is fliuid in the and the rod from the Slave is attc to the fork. I have also had it where the rod has come out of the fork . So the slave is not working the clutch. I have put it back on while still in the car and all together . Did it though the hole from the slave.

Then if that is all ok then i would say that the folk inside has punched though which happens alot more that you want to hear . But when you take off the slave you can look inside and see that .

Felt like i could be a gynecologist the next day though

And BTW my 90 has had a noise thrushed washer (as i call them, or throwout bearing ) for about 5 years but only now and again . So i am not too worried about it

You said you tried all combinations of gears, but did you try with the centre diff lock engaged as Reads90 suggested?

I had exactly this happen...I was driving along and heard a small clunk, then no drive. It was the front Driver side half shaft at the diff end that had let go. With centre diff lock engaged, I could continue home.

I did try using the transfer case gears and still no forward or backward movement.

It could well be the fork. Ever since I have had the car (all of 3 months) I have felt and heard a clunk/click though gear changes coming from the clutch area/

The previous owner had said they had just recently replaced the clutch...but I am not sure what to believe. I had serious shudder everytime I took off. I put that down to maybe the fly wheel not being machined.

More on Monday when I start to dismantle things.

    Cheers

It wouldn't be the fork, you would have drive but no dis-engagement.IMHO it is the input to gearbox or output from transfer. Pat

Sounds like output shaft IMHO too. I would do this easy test first...Run the engine in each gear, and put your ear to the gear stick. You should hear the gears turning, each with its own level of noise/pitch. The reverse should be the roughest, but apart from that there shouldn't be any harsh noises. If the clutch is not transmitting drive, you won't get any of these noises from the gears. If it's the output shaft, you will probably hear some rough grinding noises from whatever is left of the spines.

Personally, I've never heard of a clutch suddenly stop transmitting drive. If they wear out, it's a progressive thing...plenty of warning.

    Best of luck with it.

    Brid
