    First Impressions 110 TD5

Well i've given my 1999 110 TD5 Defender its first decent run in my possession.

The 120 litre fuel tank and ecoshot gas work well together, although the range is less than i'd hoped. First tank - Melbourne>Canberra got 13.5l/100km (on the 10% rule re. speed) and the second tank Canberra>Sydney>Warwick more like 12.5. (sitting at the speed limit) - nothing on the roof rack 1-up and not really fully loaded.

First Defender wave wasn't until Muswellbrook

A few days on the Sunny Coast (which seems to be overflowing with Defenders) and now up in Bundy.

Driving behind the 110 while i let my wife have a turn i noticed there's waaaaay too much smoke. 195,000km so i'm guessing time for some attention to the injectors

Used a bit of oil, but otherwise it's extremely comfortable for cruising, even with 265 Goodrich all-terrain tyres.

I'm on the look out for some good seat covers - custom fit. Anyone got any recommendations?

    Cheers

Its not likely to be TD5 injectors causing the smoke as they seem to last forever excepting for the occasional electrical fault. For starters I'd check the turbo to make sure the wastegate isn't stuck open and that the actuator rod is still connected.

Good luck with your new truck - you'll get plenty of waves, don't worry. Michelle Sac seat covers are custom made for vehicles - I have a set - they are a quality item.

    Thanks guys.

    Sooty exhaust is being investigated.

Will add MS seat covers to the list. Black Duck ones look good too.

Might be worth checking out your air cooling system. The intercooler might be oil coated on the inside not cooling at max efficiency threfore not as dense a charge and your hoses connecting to it could be delaminating causing a lack of air to the combustion process.

If consuming oil could this be contributing to the smoky look?

Hi slugburner - thanks for the suggestion. The intercooler has been fitted with a plug - for cleaning out presumably. What should I be using to flush it?

Also looking through the receipts I see that Ritters fitted an 'upgrade' ECU in 2002 ... there's no numbers on the casing though, it just has marker pen 'early upgrade ECU' on it

Pretty sure it's not oil burning though. I'd have lost a whole sumps worth on 2,500km if it was Good black smoke, thick soot in the exhaust tip and it's only really puffing under heavy load.

If you are in Bundy and need help or a chat send me a PM. I am in Moore Park Beach just 25 km up the coast from Bundy.

    .

Being an early ecu it would be a non-flashable ecu, do you have a nanocom i think you can get the serial number using one, but not 100% sure, some one will be able to confirm this.

    The Serial numbers are.

    • NNNxxxx Flashable
    • MSBxxxx Non-Flashable.

If you want to see some decent fuel consumption figures ditch the roof rack. Even empty they make a significant difference to consumption.

If it has had an upgraded ecu fitted you will get noticable black smoke on acceleration. Should clear up as speed levels out though. It is still a diesel you know

Well I pulled the ECU out after talking to Ritters (who claimed it's got an extra 20hp) and it's the MSB which is a shame...

Spoken to the gas fitter and he reckons it might be worth leaning the gas off a bit. F-in-law following me reckoned it was smokier with the gas on.

Agree with you foz on the roof rack. It's super low profile but it must be causing turbulence. Not being used at the moment, even planning to carry the 2nd spare inside, but we're planning 6 months on the road and I never know if it will come in handy
