mmm Sounds like low on Power steering fluid so there is air in the system . Or the power steering pump is nackered and on its way out

So check the leval in the pwoer steering first

As Reads90 says - first step check the fluid level, and if low figure out where it got out.

Next step, if plenty of fluid, would be to check for free play in the steering or suspension.

Also check the uni's on the steering shaft. on our county they seized up and caused very "lumpy" steering, also check the big nut on the bottam of the power steering box which holds the steering drop arm on (i think), this can come loose and allow for excesive play in the steering even though it has a lock washer fitted
    Most likely the pump though..
