    clutch 130

    Gday fellow Aussies,
what's the go when doing a clutch on a fender???
do you need to lift the floor panels, seat box, and gear box tunnel as the RAC just have done to mine or do you just drop the gear box .... i am thinking they didn't remove the crossmember any input would be great Regards Andy

    Hi Andy,

Remove tailshafts, park brake drum and backing plate, exhaust midsection, wiring/breathers, fan and top radiator hose, support with decent trans jack and remove the crossmember. Then remove transfer case and gearbox as a unit.
Some say it is easier to remove the engine to do the clutch in a 'fender, but I don't.

cheers, As i suspected the RAC didn't have a ****ing clue what they were doing, the guy said he had removed the seat boxes the floor panels and the gear box tunnel,
not having done one, even i thought what the ****!! its not the way i would have gone about things.
So i guess i am going to have to check it all over when i get it back to make sure that everything is back to normal,
I thought being the premier vehicle association of Australia they would have had a finger on the pulse, even if they don't do that many landies....they allocated 9 hours to do the job it took heaps longer so should i take along my workshop manual and throw that in the ring when they try and over charge me for extra hours???
the thing is from the get go i told them it was the clutch fork, then they spent time ****ing around phoning me suggesting it was the master cylinder (and that it needed testing before they had even touched the gearbox) but i had changed that out the weekend before they got it.
Very dissapointing experience, there are so few people who you can trust on price and quality of work in W.A.

Worth noting that the method they used is the one specified in the manual for Series Landrovers (that do not have the removable crossmember). Suggesting that this is the last one they did, and probably did not realise that the coil spring ones are a bit different - after all they look the same.

I did it as JC described, except I left the handbrake on.

You just pull the tunnel cover, nothing more, but I read and re-read the manual, and JC posted advice too

I think John has nailed it, they probably only had a manual for a Series too.....

I am guessing that they would have charged you a lot of extra labour to do the job that way...

This is the issue: it's their lack of knowledge that caused them to remove the interior panels, if they had asked i could have put them right as i had checked the manual and knew the go ...and again i verified it here on aulro, they quoted me nine hours if they try and pile on labour can i contest it ??? (consumer affairs)
The only reason i used them is i don't have a pit and don't have a hydrolic ram to drop the gear box onto once out, i certainly didn't fancy doing it on the drive.

And as indicated they spossed to be the premier auto service in Australia

the total job should be about 9-10 hours or so... the total cost should be somewhere around $1500.00

    Hi there

I have recently done my clutch in the 130 and I found it easier if your doing it yourself to remove the floor plates and center box plate (no need to remove the entire seat box).

I heard all the experts tell me differently but I dont have alot of gear like hoists etc......after the floor plates were removed I positioned the engine crane/hoist through the drivers side door to take the weight of the gear box.

Again if you have all the right gear it could be all done from underneath the vehicle but it only takes a little more effort to expose it all and get a good visual of what has to be done without busting you back on a cold cement floor.

PS I recently seen a big spead within one of the UK Land Rover Mags of changing a clutch.....

As for cost - clutch for 130 around the 300-350 and a days work - if your mechanically inclined

    well all the best.

    Wayne
