    Cool My new truck :)

    Hey guys

    I have my new truck now.. a 01 TD5 130 ute
Ill post up some good pics when i get a chance to take some.
So far i have only been duning at stockton - very impressed though.

    A few questions:
-Where is the fuel pump? It has a long range tank, i am hoping it isnt inside it. Needs replacing (very loud). The seller gave me a recond spare. I have no idea if it works though.
-The steering is loud and 'moany', mainly when turning left (parking etc). I had a good look around, the dampener is fine, but I couldnt remove the bar from the pump (lack of gear) to test which side the noise was coming from. I am hoping it is just the linkages or something. Fluid is fine. Any pointers here?
-5th gear at about 95-102kmh - the engine sounds like it is labouring. I know its not, but what would cause this? Resonance?
-Is it possible to swap the clock for a tacho? Just keen to see how hard I am working it.

    Probably more to follow.

    Cheers from a happy buyer

    Hi,

The fuel pump is almost bound to be in the tank I am afraid.

How loud is it? They aren't exactly quiet at the best of times. having said that the pumps aren't known for their reliabiity either.

I wouldn't bother fitting an unknown second hand one.

The steering noise could be a few things, steering box, ball joints, etc etc.

With regard to the tacho, yes they are commmonly available to replace the clock.

    Rgds
    Peter.

The fuel pump is VERY noisy, a constant whir. Can be heard over all noises in 4th at just under 60ks.
The fluid on the power steering dipstick is at about halfway between the notches, if not, a little lower than half. It is not frothy though,

If it comes to it, what are they worth to replace/recond?

The fuel pumps are not cheap. from LR here you are looking at around 1700$

The aftermarked suppliers will be cheaper, but i would steer clear of the cheap brand ones.

I got a new genuine LR one as a spare from a UK main dealer, inlcuding paying VAT as I had my brother send it over for about 550 landed here.

Same pump from UK main dealer was @210pounds!!

Pete, do you have any more info on the tacho replacement? Are they made for land rover and do they look 'landie'? Where can I pick one up?

With the fuel pump, I might find the thing first and take a look at it for anything that might be causing noise. Not keen on the $1700..

    Hello,
Just to chime in, I got a TD5 Tacho that replaced the clock from LR. Just check with your "Local??" dealer. It even has TD5 printed on it. It was about $150 from memory. Also an easy install, and I shifted the guages so that it is on the left of the small guages, so close to the centre.
    Cheers,
    Ken

    Thanks for your help guys,
over the weekend i dropped the fuel tank and removed the pump. It was a bigger job than i thought.
I ran the pump in a bucked with 1L of fresh turps for about 10mins. Should have seen the crap coming out of it. The nice clear turps was blacker than oil in no more that about a minute.

Scrubbed it over, removed as much sediment from all the filters that I could and replaced everything. While re-fitting, i made a new fuel gauge floatie arm out of a coat hanger. This one now fully extends into the roof of the tank (the pump sits lower than the roof by about 10cm). Fuel gauge now reads realistically for the entire tank. It used to remain on full for about 400km.

The only problem, which I failed to see when making the new arm, was that now the fuel light comes on with about 30L of diesel left. Is there any way to change this sensor in the gauge?

The pump now runs quieter. Its the same whirr when the glow plugs are warming, but in city traffic, it cannot be heard. I guess it beats $1700 for a new one

To the tacho, I called a distributor for Bearmach in Sydney, and they want $225 for it. Thats kinda steep.
Does anyone know if the tacho signal (pin 19 on the ecu) is universal? Will any tacho read it properly?

    No update on steering unfortunately.

    Thanks again
