Is that what that is. I thought it was to catch all the loose bolts. May use it as a cup holder now when on a run, novel look could start a fashion statement

Those pictures of the puma engine certainly explain the bonnet hump.

Pity about that hump though. Nice car as it is I miss the flaps and the bonnet mount.

it goes a bit like this for the 110, that came out after the S3, some of the latter S3 have exactly the same trim as the first 110 but are on leaf springs.

    110 with 3.9 isuzu diesel or 3.5 V8, with carpet its a county without its a 110
the isuzu is the best power-plant combo ever fitted to a landy

Next they took out the good CVs, moved the backseat forward ( for midgets) changed the dash removed the galvanized bits and fitted the 200tdi, possibly the best of the last of they pommy diesels. this is called the 110 tdi 200 and is quite a good machine but not as good as an county

a bit latter they decide to degrade the 200 TDI and call it the 300TDI, by upping the turbo pressure and fitting a stupid P gasket, paper head gasket and a mechanical vacuum pump/ oil dispenser and the insistently squeaky serpentine belt, about this time they also removed the Salisbury dif and replaced it with a wooden one, possibly to bring some manufacturing back to pommy land because the 300tdi was built in Brazil. this model is known as the 110 Brazilian but as most 300tdi drivers are bald or are going bald or just hide there nogons under an Akubra the term Brazilian is not in common use as it can lead to some confusion as to which way is up or down. a problem that county owners do not have to contend with.

seeing a good thing and as revenge for 1876 1918 and 1945 the kurats got involved, obviously they didn't assign there best team to the 110 job, infact the team they assigned coudint even count the result is 5 cylinders but only 4 pre heaters?and as to running wires inside the motor well?? this incarnation instead of calling the TDi 400 had to be different an just to shame all drivers of the model they stick a sticker on the back saying TD5 just to remind everyone of the joke up front. not happy with just playing with the pommy market they decide to have a go at the Yankee market as well.harking back to the days of the Kaisers influence and calling up Mexico's promise to invade the USA. Mexico obliged by sending up the 3 amigos. these professional international industrial saboteurs play havoc with that dash board lights. setting them off and flashing at the predetermined most inconvenienced times.
at this point most 110 TD5 drivers wished they had a county.

and now we are at the puma. the 110 having losed all is good bits due to a pommy engineer slipping with his razor while trying to do a Brazilian or the krauts revenge. they tried to slip in a Van motor, possibly to attract the van driver bunch in to 4 wheel driving, and why not? most courier drivers coudint tell the difference between city driving screaming though the pommy green lanes. but as to why the called it a puma which is more commonly black where vans are more commonly white? or maybe they were harking back to the south american market with dreams of a Brazilian. who knows but now the 110 was to light and was much to fast for the normal Van driver so they need to add weight. they did this by adding miles of copper wire, and when i said miles i mean kilometers. and guess what it worked slowing the 110s performance down to just a fraction above what a countys original performance is, that is with out the towing and bottom end grunt etc.

i hope this answers your question

Nope he's going to be buried in his too...that is if the lowest common Defender denominator (corrosion) doesn't bury it first....and that will happen on his before it happens on the current model (by about 20 years give or take)

Yes there are a lot of variables.

My cousin's county was used to launch ships so it had a couple of rear crossmember connected to chassis issues. But the mix of aluminium skins and steel frames in the doors was always going to be a time bomb, county or earlier defender equally. We've spent many a jolly blacksmithing hour dealing with red rot in foot wells and at the base of the B and C pillars. No sign of that in mine yet
