Thread: more on tyres and rims

TBH - I'm not 100% sure that a 255 will fit on a standard Disco steel rim as I think the tyre will be to wide.

A 255 fits fine on a disco steel. anything from 225-285 should be fine. I have disco rims with 235s, 255s and 285s.

Mal - I know for sure a 285 will rub, as will a 265. A 255 should just clear, but I have never run them on unmodified rims.

thanks ben, Just struggling to get 255 at a decent price, no stock and way over priced. I did find some silver stone MT for just under $200 a tyre but they were 265s. Maxxis are the only stock available in WA right now $330 per tyre!!! BF new type Muds are around $385 per tyre and no stock. wow this si difficult. Just waiting for my disco rims to be streightened up a bit and then a re spray or powder coat, I cant quite decide then the tyres.

I was after some steel rims for my 110. I had a chat to old mate at king wheels about sizes and so on i wanted to fit 285's. He called me back 15 mins later say 285's will fit and wont rub, since then i've got 16x8 rims (zero offset) and put 265/75's on (becauce its a more popular size and if your out bush easier to find one if it needs replacing). Hope that helps.

I have been told that these tyres will fit on my 6.5 x 16 steel rims on my 2001 Defender 130. I will have them at the end of September and will let you know if they fit. I am annoyed that I will need to replace my tubes from my current 7.50 x 16 tyres, so therefore may purchase some Discovery steel rims. Does anyone know what year rims I should be looking for? D1, D2, D3 etc. This is foreign to me. I can get some from a wrecker in SA for $50 each or go alloy with the boost rims for $250 each.

Frankfe you need 16x7 rims minimum for that width tyre, disco 1 rims, or early Range rover fit the defender, there is alot of talk in here about load carrying capacity of the various rims, I think Disco steel rims are OK on th e 130.

255/85's can be run tubeless on 130 tubed rims successfully, but probably not legally.
I'm neither advocating nor recommending the practice, but can confirm many people have been doing it for years without problems. There are multiple threads on the practice too.

If you were going alloy, look at Performance Wheels TX-1 rim. It has the necessary load rating for the 130 (1400kg/wheel) and can be had in different offsets.
Ideally D1 rim needs the centre moved to mimic the extra offset of a 130 rim.

BFG's and Maxxis 255/85's are legal on 6.5" rims. Check their fitting charts.
Lots of us have been using them for years on those rim iszes.
