LR Defender Replacent Project Underway - Project Icon

Looks like LR have been given the go ahead for the next generation Defender. I saw news of this in a newsletter from LRO magazine:

Project ICON gets underway to replace the Defender - News - Land Rover Owner International magazine

    Also good initial report here:

    http://www.themotorreport.com.au/43361/land-rover-defender-to-be-succeeded-by-project-icon/

It's worth noting that there's been mention of this in the AULRO RSS news feed section by the auto news bot itsame as well.

    Regards,

    Jon

I reckon the defender on the D3 platform will be superb as long as they adapt the D3's entire off road platform in regards to the off road ability and the air suspension etc...
if they dont and just put independent on with springs etc I think that will suck

The D3 is a VERY capable vehicle......and I would be happy with one that hs a defender body....
Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......

Great news, the TD6 is awesome engine.
Better news is that our old Defes are going to keep the value very well and the bad news is that I do not care because I cannot afford a new one

interesting. As much as we love the defender a change is well overdue. Being built on the D3 platform would be a mass step up. The D3 has proven to be a very capable truck, having that capability with the functionality of the Defender would be a very good combination, and the D3 seems to be squashing the Land Rover reliability issues, as is the Vogue, RRS and Freelander 2. If Land Rover release a brand new machine with an increased emhpasis on the reliability aspect, and they include a broad range of versions like they are at the moment then i reckon the new Fender will be hard to compete with. I'm thinking they will use much of the superseded disco tooling as possible to save costs.

An SVX (have I got that right for the 60th aniv defender) grill and lights, disco back to A pillar, from there back, SW version styled like the last of the boxy style pajero.

They won't want to hurt disco sales/price, so probably no td6, only 2.2 freelander engine.

Steel body panels, and I don't see where they can reduce enough weight to come in lighter than the current defender despite what one of those linked articles claims.
