I am in WA so not much chance of stealing one from you!
Thanks for all of the advice. Have a bit to read up on now?

Look for rust at the very front of the footwells (pull the mats right out), in the bottom of the doors (apparently in most of them), worn suspension bushes, shocks and steering damper, worn ball joint on top of rear diff, the dreaded knock from g/box, t/case or wheel splines, timing belt kit change - all the things I've just learnt about (woe is me) and still fixing. But my, they do look fine, don't they? It's the cult thing I like.
cheers gerald
ps gotta agree with abaddonxi, can't go past this forum
I'm in Sydney and in the "for sale"market, they're like hen's teeth. I was almost thinking of going as far as Perth to get one and heaps cheaper there.

Thanks for your advice, I feel your pain, I have rebuilt a 1995 P38 this year and my wife has not stopped thanking me for it!
I may have to hold on the P38 for a while yet, a few more things to renew and she will be as good as a 7 and 1/2 year old car (not 15!)
I just saw a 2001 Defender on Carsales.com.au here in WA... $18500.00.
Its hard to judge km's though, my P38 had only done 160 000 when I bought it last year. Its done 190 000 with a rebuilt motor now. The Defenders I have seen online obviously have a diesel motor but have done a lot more kms. Just goes to show you how poor (and what a bad rep) the P38's have.
I'll keep studying...

on a p38 your best freind is contact spray....i just read the write up in land rover owners international apparently people think they are **** boxes but the major thing is dry relays so they say, if you come to Perth in a moment of "i really want to go to a rather boring metropolis", pop round i can let you check it out ..may be of use and encouragement.
Its nuts but appears if they never go off road the relay for the transfer case gets full of crap ...would have thought that the other way round lol
