well cos im slowly trying to get my fender to keep up with a ford KA il be fitting a boost gadge so i no if im about to blow stuff up, most ones iv seen put them were the clock is but i like my clock so that will be staying, and i dont want it stiking out for the hole world to see like a punks skyline,,

so what sort of places have all you smart people put them, and all the other cool dials and stuff

I've just put in a TD5 tachometer as well as boost gauge into the Peril.

INHO all diesels should have a tacho. And a boost gauge helps with knowing how hard you're working the engine....useful for fuel ecomomy to make up for the times you push the engine hard.

I moved my clock and my fuel gauge into a Mudpod in the centre of the dash and placed the tacho next to the speedo and then the boost gauge next to the tacho. I moved the coolant temperature gauge across to the far right.

This location for the boost gauge (a mechanical gauge) makes it easier to run the tube from the engine bay to the back of the gauge without kinking it.

Check out the EMS2 from entertainer on site.
You can with a dremel fit the unit into the one of the defender 50mm recesses, lose the water temp...

The EMS2 with appropriate senders will show you and warn you when out of range:

-water temp
-coolant level
-oil pressure
-boost pressure
-egt
-engine hours / volts

Its a great bit of kit and will come in cheaper than buying a set of 50mm gauges for all of the above?

i thought an exhaust gas temp gauge coupled with a boost gauge would be a more useful setup

with a tacho and boost gauge setup you still have no idea what exhaust temps you are runing.....if they are running too high this will kill your engine

i run an EGT and boost gauges on my tweeked 300dti and am pretty confident i can manage the temps to prolong the life of the engine

The EMS is certainly a great bit of kit and cheaper than if you were to get all of it's functions in individual gauges.
I like to look at things simulataneously; I understand that you can not display more than one function at a time - is that right?

Mellow Yellow mentioned the MudPods: MUDSTUFF.CO.UK, MUD Dashboard Pod - 'MudPod', Land Rover Defender Solutions: West Yorkshire
They come in two sizes and look particularly good in a Defender.
My vote would be for a MudPod mounted on the dash.

I have an EMS-1 which I use principally to monitor EGT and I generally leave it on this display only toggling through the other read-outs from time to time.

However, as the EMS-1 allows me to set alarm limits on all the things it's measuring, I don't need to have anything else on display other than the EGT. If anything unusal occurs with the others, the EMS-1 will alert me.

The only thing with measuring EGT is getting the probe in the right position within the exhaust manifold. I discovered how to do this in other posts in this forum.

An EGT gauge is an essential bit of kit if you've boosted the output of your engine, eg with a TD5 by re-mapping. Otherwise probably not.

Incidentally, Discowhite has posted photos of his boost gauge installation.
