Thread: Redbook pricing for Defenders?

Defenders usually go over their redbook value... sometimes by quite an amount if the car is in good nick and has some options.

I'm a great believer in redbook generally, but given there are so few defenders private sellers tend to hang out for the higher prices and seem to get them.

Most common question from new members looking for a defender is
"Why are all the defenders going for a lot more than red book says?"

Red book price for a second hand defender is what you pay for the claped out rusted one. Expect to pay substantialy more.

Problem with redbook is that it records only what gets declared as a sale price.
Most private sales are passed at a lower written down value to save stamp duty etc.
This is probably the case with many private cars.

Its a good leverage though when redbook says the car is worth less than the asking price. Not so good when you are selling however.

Thanks for the replies. I guess the fact that there will be lower numbers of land rovers being sold too will mean that the variations don't average out as they would with the big sellers.

It's good to know though that the Redback is likely to undervalue, I was starting to wonder when some looked to be up to 40% too low.

Does anyone have the sales figures for defenders these days? I remember when we bought ours LR was only doing low 300's a year... which is miniscule in the Aussie vehicle market.

My point is they seem to be selling a few more pumas which may alter the supply a bit resulting in lower prices in years to come. Maybe...

I bought a 95 Def 110 300TDi in August 09 for $13. It's got roof racks, sunraysia wheels, alum sidesteps and bullbar, towbar, etc. Spent $1100 on repairs and maintenance and still another $500 to go. Got a bit of rust in the Lh footwell and doors. They're like hens teeth in Sydney. Much cheaper in Perth and Adelaide. Disco's a plenty in Victoria.

Oh! Bargain!

K !!! bugger, don't ya just hate getting caught doing typos or trying to be cooler with ya lingo than ya really are! probably why my missus is busting my chops everytime I need to spend more on it. OK I meant to type $13k ($13,000).
Unfortunately not such a fabulous bargain as I'd like to have got. lol
