they mount up off of the accelerator pedal and the steering column. they work sort of like a choke, step on the accelator till the engines doing the revs you want pull out the hand throttle cable till it takes up the slack and twist.

to release twist it the other way.

they take about an hour to install.

There's a hand throttle like Blknight describes on a 2.8 litre Rodeo TDi, about 2000 MY. Works on the accel pedal. Shouldn't be hard to source from a wreckers.

Hmm interesting and probably illegal to retrofit !
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

If the cable for the hand throttle connects to the accelerator pedal it should work with any engine, including a TD5.

Something like a choke cable with a reliable twist lock as Blknight.aus suggested, or a gear change cable and lever from a push bike would should be suitable.

I have an engine driven hydraulic pump for winching and plan to rig a hand throttle using a lever and cable from a push bike. I hope to mount the lever on the gear stick.

I doubt they are illegal, as I believe vehicles are modified with hand throttles for some disabled drivers.

Actually I now remember the Rodeo one acts in a continuous manner, you rotate the knob until the engine speed is where you want it, rotate anticlockwise to release slowly. It's quite a precise action from what I remember. Should be very easy to get out as it's just held in to the plastic skirt under the dash.

Wouldn't the computer start to through error messages on the Defender TD5, and the accellerator become a safety issue ?
I like the idea of a hand throttle while offroading in rough terrain but I wonder if by doing that you could turn a TD5 into a TOYOTA PRIUS (automatic acceleration mode !!!!!!).

In all the 4wdriving I've done, in the vehicles with a hand throttle... I've never used the thing

Never even crossed my mind to be truthful....

I like to control the vehicle, and the 'toes hard against the kick panel' trick provides enough control for me to be happy.

I had messed with the idea of an electronic switch to do a TD5 'idle up' for using winching, showers etc... but just.. well.... meh! CBF

However, with the anti-stall etc... If the terrain is that rough, why wouldnt you be climbing on 'tick over' (idle) in which case a hand throttle is not required
