A/C fan recently made a noise like a leaf being sucked in and broken up. After a short time a high pitched whistle started. Working on the leaf theory I though that this would eventually get blown away but no such luck. Whistle continues and gets higher in pitch with the faster fan speed.

Before I attempt to pull the fan out and check what is going on, I would appreciate any advice about possible cause, problem or fix.

I assume it is a Td5 or Tdi? If so, remove the LH guard cover for the heater inlet air, ondo the screws holding the duct inplace, remove the washer bottle etc and mounting clamp and the duct can be removed completely. The heater blower fan is then right there in front of you and you will hopefully be able to see the errant leaf, or dessicated mouse with its tail stuck in the fan
(Edit: Ooops, just read it was the A/C fan, sorry different proceedure. Drop the bottom cover plate and then lower the A/C evaporator assembly down from under the dash enough to expose the fan inlet 'cage' looking thingys(there is one at each end of the fan housing) it should then become easy to again see the dessicated mouse from the fan blades.)

thanks for the advise, i have a 130Tdi and the aircon sounds like it is boiling water after it has been going for about 20 min, (especially when cornering) then some liquid comes out in the passenger footwell onto the rubber mat, when i park a little water comes out the tube underneath the truck. but often more in the footwell. any ideas? does it need cleaning out in there somewhere?

I would look under the dash in the footwell and see if the pipe has been kicked off which happens to Elite A/C systems, then i would check that the drain on the evaperAtor is not blocked.
Does it still produce coldness ?
when was it last serviced? how often do you hammer it off road?

Mine makes the boiling water sound too, but it doesn't seem to affect the A/C's coldness as the water that would normally get dumped onto the ground is going into the passenger footwell. About to check my drainpipe is/isn't blocked this arvo as it's my 1st day off with the new car.

Just bought a 2001 Defender 110 Extreme.
