Thread: Changing starter motor, easy job or not?

Hi there,

Can anyone tell me whether it is easy to get a startermotor in and out of a 300 TDi, Defender 110 (model 1998)??

If so, I am thinking of doing it myself and get it over to an auto electric workshop to see whether they can recodition it. Or maybe I am better of finding an secondhand one if that's cheaper.

Anyone who has experience doing that job, to give some advise?

We're currently staying one hour North of Melbourne. Recommendations of good auto electricians (/garages) around here, are more then welcome as well.

I have a Disco not a Defender, but it is a 300Tdi.
I also haven't actually removed the starter motor, but believe it is a straight forward job.

Unplug the battery.
Undo the power cables on the back of the starter motor (I think there are two).
Undo the bolts holding the starter motor on (three I believe).
Remove starter motor.

Job done.

Can someone who has actually removed the starter motor confirm the above?

the ease of doing it depends on your hand strength and intuition.

mechanicing wise its a 1/5 job

strength wise it can be a 4/5 job.



Its pretty much as outlined above with the providing steps replacing step 1.

1. Write down/source any security codes for electronic equipment fitted as well as any setup information (IE what freq's are in the radio store buttons)
2. disconnect the earth lead from the batterie(s)

then as described. remove the cables from the starter unbolt it (leave the top bolt till last) and manhandle it out.

installation being the reverse of removal.
