I think a photo will help with this one?
What ARE these triangle shape things?
S
Just got my head off, however 2 of the 3 triangle shape things (they dont go anywhere) are corroded- they just have deep pitting about 3-4 mm. This may not be a problem but they are wider than it should be and may be at the limits of the gasket i think.
Are they repairable ie: can be welded then machine the head or is it better to go for a new head.

mm i just put photos up with the post and i viewed them in a preview.
sorry my internets are playing up...
got photos now.
My guess would be you have a leaker between water gallery and the pot, leaking both through the corroded section and a broken down gasket layer.
I feel you will be shopping for a new head mate...

I agree, new head will be the best solution hereThats unmachineable. You could try getting it welded and then treated and then rehardened and then refaced and then fitting it back up to find it isn't really all that good a job...A new one would allay all worries about future reliability.

Hey JC
talking new 300 heads, are you using these "all new" designs with improved water galleries from the UK...
any ideas on the best source for one?

Yeah what is the go with the new designed heads, are they any better. I have heard a few negative things about them- not sure what though. Any insight from an expert in this area.
Now i may need a new head, im thinking the next step and pulling the block out as well or at least take the sump off and have a looksee.
Well, I can't really see what all the fuss is about, AFAIK they don't make all that much of a difference as the engine block isn't modified at all, so how is any 'extra flow' going to be advantageous without more flow through the block face water galleries???
I have kept using standard ones and haven't seen the need to 'upgrade'.
Recently a customer of mine bought a new performance Tdi head from Turner engineering. Came complete with valves etc and a fair amount of inlet flow work behind the valve seats apparently. Was VERY good value and only took 9 days from UK to Tassie.
Their website has more info but an email enquiriy would give you an exact quote, minus VAT etc.
And it goes relly well with only a conservative pump tweak
