Thread: steering noise/bump

Similar symptoms happened to me with a D1. Whenever I tested the front end, jacked the car up and "wobbled the wheels" there was no movement. When one day I had my wife turn the steering wheel with the motor on there was substantial movement in one of the tie rod end ball joints. Try this as the movement did not occur when the weight was off the front end.

I feel a similar thing on the puma when its a really hot day....and I also get a bit of feedback through the steering bumps and stuff.....

hpw ever when mine does it it only does it steering wheel to the left...it creaks and then feels notchy like something is binding.

I was wondering whether ours could of been the steering damper as its only on hot days after a long drive. or whether we had a bush failing somewhere

That noise to me sounds like the bolts are not tight in the panhard rod or the bushes are worn. Check the steering damper ase well.

if you were offroad in mud and rocks just before it started to happen check the dampner.

if its not that its more than likely going to be the panhard rod bushes or a tie rod.

low on the list by not totally discountable is the steering box mounts or the pitman arm.

everything else will that can cause it will have other symptoms.

Almost certainly free movement either on a tie rod end or the panhard rod, more likely the latter. Get someone to rock the steering while you look for it underneath.

Other, less likely possibilities include either a loose steering box or the pitman arm loose on its spline.

Finding it and fixing it should be considered a priority job.
