    Replacing Fuel Gauge/Sender

Has anyone out there replaced their fuel gauge with a VDO equivalent? My gauge has been playing up for a while now, and seeing as I'm installing a gauge for the aux tank, I may as well get the main tank gauge up and running too. The auxilliary tank gauge comes with it's own sender, so that's fine, but what I am wondering is if there is a VDO gauge on the market that will run off the stock sender in the main tank???

If not, is there a VDO sender available that can be mounted in the original location (1994 300tdi - sender is in the side of the tank), or do I need to go drilling holes in the top of the tank to mount a new sender?
