    Down travel

    how much would be normal downward travel on a 2 inch lifted defender ute the front is roughly 1 3/4 inch an the back prolly half inch it ride's pretty bad when out in paddock im guessing when it was lifted longer shocks were not fitted

    I think you wold be right. I had OME shocks on my Puma ,it had the same problem even at standard hight. I've since fitted terra firma +2 inch shocks and this has transformed my bus

    Old Man Emu should have there arse kicked for selling shocks that are too short. TJM have a long series of shocks I think they where somthing Gold Edition long travel shocks, they looked good for a 2 inch lift.

    yes they should i couldnt work out why i made banging noise's ova bumps i thort it was the tray it did have a habbit of rattlein loose but finally worked it out today , im on first ute i had tough dog shocks any one else used these i only did bout 10,000 with them b4 i rolled ova an tore the diff out an wreaked em

    They are Terrafirma Pro Sport + 2 inch shocks and retail at about $216.00 a pair. I got mine from Rovercraft. Your springs may also be hard as hell . What springs did you fit?

    rightio sounds good , yep they are hard previous owner said they were set to have a 300kg load at times so big ova kill for a ute witch i hardly ever put a load on so prolly should change springs to

    That doesn't sound right to me.

    I don't have much experience with defenders, so I am drawing on my RRC experience. Apart from larger diameter rear springs, the front and rear suspensions look to be generally the same as RRC.

    The extended length of the shockies is what should limit suspension down travel, but sometimes down travel is limited by the swaybar if fitted. There is a legal requirement that the travel must be such that neither end of the springs can unseat.

    AFAIK, the stock shockie travel is 8" (203mm). The rear shockie is laid forward at a considerable angle, and so this geometry allows vertical travel at the axle which exceeds to travel length of the shockie (probably getting close to 10" or 250mm).

    Naturally, a 2" suspension lift is going to subtract 2" from the available down travel, unless longer travel shockies are fitted, or the upper shockie mounts and bump stops are lowered.

    Depending where you are from, modification rules permit suspension travel to be altered by 1/3 (from memory).

    So down travel at the rear of about 1/2" is a long way out from what it should be after a 2" lift.

    At the rear, it is relatively simple to disconnect one end of the shockie to see if it is limiting the down travel. Also check the shockie travel at the same time.

    If you are checking front down travel, one side at a time, you should find that you will run out of travel before the shockie on the drooped side is fully extended - this is due to binding in the radius arm bushes.
