Exhaust bracket meets rear tail shaft (Puma)

I was doing a tour of inspection today (as you do) and came across this:

I've cleaned the area but you can see the scoring.

I tend to treat speed humps and traffic calming devices with mild contempt as you do when driving a Defender. There are many such obstacles where I live. So I imagine that when the rear end comes down the end of the bracket engraves a line where it and the ascending tail shaft meet.

I'm sure that doesn't add to the longevity of the drive train.

I guess that LRA will blame the man who installed the snorkel, the bullbar and driving lights and the Outback storage unit.

So check it out.

mmmmmmmmm I wonder if this could be the cause of my what appears to be noisy exhaust...I will go and have a look now mahn thanks for the heads up

Well what do you know...I looked and thought nup, no where near, looks good...took a cloth to it just to make sure and sure enough there are score marks on the tail shaft not as bad as yours but they are there.

is that pin inside the rubber mount?
if so,, all should be OK,,

its probably noisey and bad engineering, but easily fixable.

But, of course, my glass is always half full---

Bugger never checked mine, but even so its not a mark left from rubber its a score mark quite deep on mine left by something presumably metal (probably the pin)

Just checked mine and lot's of clearance. That said I can see that if the prop shaft was deflected up (as in when the rear is loaded down) this would be reduced - like when I was towing the trailer. But even so it is still a good way to the side of the prop shaft. Can't get a piccy at present as the car is dripping water everywhere from being washed and the P&S camera's battery is flat.

Don't you love hand built tolerances. To think I want to save up and buy a Morgan one day

Derek heaps of gap between ours also......did you take a cloth to the tail shaft and give it a wipe?

I looked at mine and though no way..but when I wiped it mahn was spot on the money

Yes its bad engineering and yes a pry bar and some leverage will fix it...

On full suspension compression these bits will meet.

well its quite evident that they already have.....

and why mine is probably not as bad as yours as the defender has only been on one off road trip up at zig zag....early last year. since then its done the touring bit and commuting but not what I would call off road
