    Fuel Economy - lack of.

    300Tdi Defender 130 (1994).

I have had it "tickled" by M.R. Auto for a bit of extra power (that's a laugth when talking about a Tdi) anyway...

Current consumption is 13.16 litres / 100 km. (mostly unladen)

I'd hope for 10-10.5 l /100km based on others experience.

    Umm, help.

What should I be looking at / for ?
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

My 110 SW get's very similar figures to yours and has also had an MR Tickle.

Mine was tickled shortly after buying it so don't have a baseline to compare it to.

I had a 200 TDI disco and a 200TDI defender till it rolled. I believe you should be able to mid 10L per 100 or better sitting on 100k/Hr.

My currrent TD5 in city trafic every day gets 10.5L/100k's

All mine has is the 'tickle', K&N air filter & standard exhaust to 1st muffler, flow thur muffler & 2 1/2" standard bend exhaust. No 2nd muffler. I have adjusted the tappets a couple of times over the 200 thousand k's I've owned it.

I normally don't bury the foot @ hills, just a squeeze & let the motor do the rest.

Unladen, both city & hiway (105 max) 10 1/2 lts/100k's, can get sub 10's on hiway.

Last trip away 1100k's dirt, ute full & family with a/c on most the way. 100 kmh tops, 11 1/2ltr.
Last trip away 3000k's unladen, NSW 110 kmh freeways, hilly & having fun, 11 lts/100.

PS: unsure if it's a difference. Running 255/85/16 & trip meter is running true.

This all changes once I put a heavy trailer on though.

Mine is a 99 300Tdi - had it from new.

For the first five years of its life, it was a daily use company car, and returned 10l/100km day-in, day-out around town.
It use 12l/100km on the highway when laden.

Now around 11 years old, fuel economy is 12l/100km around town.
    Also been MR tweeked.

    Two possibilities:

    1. Diesel fuel energy per liter has deteriorated over the past 10 years (this is quite likely as when I used BP ultimate diesel, I do get improved economy)

    2. Fuel components (pump, injectors etc.) getting old and worn

Used to get 14L/100k in a '92 200tdi Deefer, then had the injectors done at 180 000km.. brought it back to 11, and gave more power (felt like a new engine!). The injector service cost $1100 though (in 2001) so took a while to make that back on a fuel consumption / costs comparison.....

This was a bog standard unit...

I've had defenders the last couple of vehicles, but a 300TDI disco before then.

I just looked up all old records on it, and it averaged around 8.5L/100km over 210,000kms...by far the most economical of my vehicles.

    Defender fuel burn.

Tray back defender around town on 750/16 XZA burns around 9.5 litres/ 100km and SYD-BNE flat out urgent trip 10litres /100km.

Brother in laws Disco does slightly more in consumption but then he doesn't have the streamlined shape of the defender....

don't drive it over 100km/hr otherwise burn increases significantly.
