Thread: Side storage lockers for 110 wagon (within wheel arch)

My first landy was an ex-army SIIa LWB which had some storage lockers built into the wheel arch cavities on both sides, accessible from inside the vehicle. They looked like ammo lockers !

There's a lot of vacant space in behind there in those arches - and as mine is a 7 seater, the rollout drawer style isn't an option for me, nor are the built up units which sit on the wheel arch boxes. Even if depth is limited, width is OK for the usual tools, straps etc.

I know they mostly existed on military Landys (perentie question) and the Series vehicles, and have also seen an external unit from Terra Firma (Terrafirma Side storage lockers | Accessories - Storage Lockers Accessories for Land Rover Vehicles) but the latter is not what I'm after - prefer internal access.

I'm currently using a space case on the roof rack for my recovery gear, tools etc., but would rather keep the weight lower and preserve the roof space. Just seems like a waste no to use this space within the arches - and surely it's a good project waiting to be brought to life!

I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about this or possibly a referral to a good tech in Sydney who could knock me up a set?

All, I had some info back from Steve at Landie Boxes (Gap Analysis - Vehicle preparation for overland expeditions) who makes prefab and custom locker kits for 90, 110 and 130 (plus series). They have models which allow access from both internal and external - see the site link for examples.

Steve kindly sent me some extra photos of the internally accessible lockers as mounted to his 109. I like his choice of storage item! Here's the text from Steve for those interested - gotta love the gun boxes!

You'll see from the photos attached and on the site - there is tons of useful storage space there waiting to be used - perfect for keeping heavier tools and recovery gear (and beer!) down low and secure .

I may even just get my local alum fabricator to make me up some custom boxes like this to maximise the size of the space to my set-up.

I have included a couple of pictures that might help. Funnily enough I do not show any internal pictures as I am not the world’s best cameraman and all my internal shots are basically crap!

These images are of the dual opening box installed in front of the rear wheel in my 38 year old 109. The internal opening box you are looking at is basically a version of this box that is easy to install as it slots in from the top of the arch. In addition it has a 3mm checker plate lid as this is the most requested lid.

The floor box is designed for trucks that don’t have the rear fuel tank and filler – have a quick look under your truck – a guy I know has one installed aft of the rear bulkhead and has had no problems with interference of components. I am going to put a couple into my 109 – it has twin under seat tanks – I will put one at the back and one as a battery box further forward. I just need to finish up a gearbox and engine swap to confirm final clearances for the battery box.

I have also made gun boxes for people but have no images of these as they have been basically one offs. I have two leads at the moment for gun boxes and as I have been asked to install these as well as make them I will get some images of them.
