The other purpose built ship also from Incat, Hull 069 - the “Franscisco” built in 2012, is the one which operates the Buenos Aires to Montevideo route. This is the fastest commercial passenger ship in the world able to do 58 knots (107.6kph). Pretty impressive for a 7,100 tonne ship.

Uses the same electric propulsion system but instead has two LNG 22MW gas turbines. Smaller than Hull 096 with much lower carrying capacity, requires more draft, but can do the round trip between refills when at its service speed.

These ships don’t get additional range capacity to go around the world if they don’t need it as it is just extra weight for no additional benefit. They are designed for a specific job in mind and do it well.

Originally Hull 096 was also going to be LNG gas turbines, but then the owner opted to change to full electric for the shorter route and lower operating costs. The owner also wants to make sure passengers get to spend a bit more time in the duty free shops which will be the largest on any ferry in the world.

Would make for a fantastic holiday once the new ship is in service. Fly to Buenos Aires first, pick up a hire car and take the ferry across to Colonia del Sacramento. Road trip to Montevideo. Return via the high speed ferry back to Buenos Aires. Get to travel on two unique record breaking Aussie ships!

I agree. What a trip! I just don't know how comfortable I would feel, though, on an electric vessel carrying a stack of rental EVs. What could possibly go wrong?

"It'll Ruin The Weekend" Bowen Says Of Landcruiser

Federal Energy Minister Chris Bowen has today confirmed that the weekend is, in fact, under threat.
"It's the LandCruiser that's ruining the weekend these days," Bowen said, after being shown fuel dockets from city drivers now paying north of $400 to fill a 79 Series.

"Back in 2019, Scott Morrison said EVs would end the weekend. Turns out it was diesel at three bucks a litre."


The Minister's comments come as families across Australia are being forced to choose between a weekend away and filling up a vehicle that was originally designed to cross the Simpson Desert but now mostly fords dips in a supermarket carpark.

Just proves the ****wit is more of an absolute fool than i thought he is.

Next an owner operator truck driver will call and say he is under contract,can't increase his prices, and his fuel cost per day has almost doubled.

Maybe it is the fault of the truck?

Ditto for the many others who run a business,and use diesel,or for that matter any type of fuel.
It must be the fault of the machinery they use.

I go to Betoota a couple of times a year and we stay the night on the way through. Trish and Robbo are characters but this is not their work.

I blame the truckie's contract lawyer for not including "force majeure and/or force de geurre" or "fuel price increase" clauses .
