SMRs also produce more radioactive waste. A huge reactor is preferable to lots of smaller ones. It is more expensive to produce lots of little ones to match the output of one big reactor.
I've no particular issue with Australia getting nuclear subs, although someone in the military told me battery subs are much harder to detect on batteries, while reactors still have to make quite a bit of noise. Subs don't have the containment that commercial reactors have. An old report when Canada was considering them. Interesting the touch on tension between what the US Navy wants to release on accidents (basically no info) and independent investigations find that about 25% of sub issues relate to the reactor. https://inis.iaea.org/collection/NCL...0/24010563.pdf
A graph shown in an earlier entry to this thread, taken from a report from the Ontario Energy Board, shows nuclear generated electricity to be the cheapest - this is after subsidies if I understand the report correctly. The same report shows that nuclear generated electricity receives approximately two and half times the subsidy than hydro, to make the electricity affordable. You can't cherry pick reports - they are often dense with complexities and need to be unpacked to really be understood. The report also says because nuclear operates at 80-90% capacity these facilities are more likely to supply less energy than forecast due to unscheduled outages. https://www.oeb.ca/sites/default/fil...t-20231019.pdf
Check out Lazards electricity cost estimates - nuclear is the most expensive.

It seems our new government wants to build 4 new nuclear plants the coming time. They better get it done since the pendulum always swings from left to right and vice versa so if the greenies (god forbid) get back in power the next term they might as well kill it off again.
