The Hydrogen via hugely inefficient hydrogen electrolysis with apparently FREE wind and FREE solar has at least been put back in the it COSTS too much really place.

Had some fun while buying some things this morning. Great moon last night then a show about plans for new missions to the moon after taking care of my grandkids. My kids have all gone to China and left me babysitting the dog and two cats.

While Earth's methane is a byproduct of life and geology, lunar methane is a rare, trapped resource that could change how we explore the solar system.
I. Where is the Methane?

Lunar methane exists in vanishingly small quantities compared to Earth, but its location makes it accessible.

• The "Cold Traps": At the lunar poles, some craters have not seen sunlight for billions of years. Temperatures here stay below -230°C. These act as "cryogenic freezers," trapping methane that arrived via comets or was synthesized by solar wind hitting the lunar soil.
• The Proof: In 2009, NASA’s LCROSS mission slammed a rocket into the Cabeus crater. The resulting debris plume clearly showed water vapor, ammonia, and methane.

II. The "Gas Station" Strategy

To live on the Moon, we must "live off the land"—a concept known as In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU). Methane is the "Goldilocks" fuel for this strategy:

1. High Stability: It is easier to store than liquid hydrogen.
2. Rocket Ready: Modern rockets like SpaceX’s Starship are designed to run on liquid methane.

How do we get it?

• Thermal Mining: Using giant mirrors to reflect sunlight into dark craters, "sublimating" the ice directly into gas to be captured in pressurized tents.
• Mineral Synthesis: Using lunar soil (regolith) as a catalyst to combine harvested hydrogen and carbon into fresh methane.

III. The Hazer Process: A Lunar Game-Changer?

A fascinating candidate for lunar industrialization is the Hazer Process, originally developed by Australia’s Hazer Group. This process uses methane pyrolysis to crack the gas into two valuable products: Hydrogen gas and Solid Graphite.
Why Hazer works on the Moon:

• The Iron Connection: The process requires an iron ore catalyst. Lunar regolith is rich in iron-bearing minerals like ilmenite.
• The Two-for-One Output: Instead of just fuel, the Hazer process produces high-purity graphite. On the Moon, graphite is a "super-material" used for 3D printing habitats, making dry lubricants to fight abrasive lunar dust, and building batteries.

The Big Picture: On the International Space Station, methane is often treated as a waste product and vented into space. On the Moon, the Hazer process could "close the loop," ensuring every atom of hydrogen is recycled and every atom of carbon is turned into construction material.

I am sure i heard the current PM,or it could have been the Energy Minister, say before the last election,that Aus would be the Green Hydrogen capital of the world,with $8Bn of support,and over 50 plus companies on the ground,with over $200Bn in investments.

Seems that is all BS,no surprise

Sorry I could resist that. The billions wasted on Hydrogen Electrolysis while Hazer engineers, management, staff and long-suffering cash cows of investors watched on the side show of LOOK AT MOI from evangelist in gov or trees took taxpayer funds for a ride


Of interest is the current takeover of BlueScope by another interesting WA gent. He always seemed far more a smart plodding business guru I agree with most of the time
