The figures that bloke quotes for the Rivian make it a game changer, at least for me. If all that turns out to be true, then this is the moment I can see me going fully EV. Up to now I've considered keeping the Defender for the long-distance stuff. Irealise there won't be chargers in the scrub for a long time, but following roads rather than tracks, and going town to town anywhere in Australia starts getting very close.

And best of all, it looks like the Rivian R1S comes in green [tonguewink] , a colour now mostly absent from the LR palette.

This is probably a good reason Land Rover has drastically modernised the new Defender:

It only did poorly on pedestrian safety. Nobody buying a Wrangler could care less about that. That is what people who buy Volvos care about.
The major issue with the Rivian seems to be that it is perhaps best described as "vapourware"!
A real life assessment can only be made when actual vehicles appear - and then really only when the press can actually drive examples.
Worth remembering that the motor industry has a long history of trumpeting vehicles that don't really exist.
A couple of examples - when the first Landrover was unveiled in Amsterdam in 1948, the examples on show were significantly different in several major respects from the production model months later. And there were many changes made in the first year of production.
Or in 1912 when the first Morris car was unveiled at a motor show, it was a static exhibit - with the engine carved from painted wood, with real accessories bolted on.
Given how many are just urban assault vehicles, I would challenge that as a general comment. It won't matter to enthusiasts (in fact it may be a badge of honour - "look how hard I am"), but many urbanites will be scared off. Won't matter too much overall though. They are the ones bought on appearance and then onsold within a year as they realise they have so many compromises just not worth the image for the discomfort. Happened a bit with D90s also. Bought as they are just so cool, but living with that became a drag...
