Which is the reason Mazda moved to rebadging another brand of ute.

Its a bit more pragmatic than that.
Mazda no longer has access to Ford Aus R&D since Ford sold off their Mazda shares.
Also Mazda has used the joint Mazda/Ford plant in Thailand (that built the Ranger based BT50) to build other cars.
So they needed someone else to design, engineer and build the BT50 for them.
