Hey all,

I’m trying to figure weight on a setup Defender 110 wagon for my work – here's some stuff I've been given. Seems pretty easy to go overboard...

I'll go through it bit by bit when I can, but in the meantime can you run your eyes over the below and offer comments/corrections? (Or point me to the threads I should have found?)

As an aside, truck will be set up with HD front springs, polyair bags rear and Bilsteins or something all round.

Edit: Cut and paste from their doc went a bit weird... hopefully it's clear enough...

Edit: Things I notice + comments from yourselves...

Hey DukeR,

It is easy to go overboard but with a bit of planning you will be right.

Looking at some of your weights I think that you over allowing.

Checker Plate would only 2k's at the max, 25k's for a dual battery also seems to bit excessive.

I fitted an ARB bull bar to mine a short time ago and had it in the shed for a couple of weeks. It was easy for one person to move around, I don’t think it would have been any where near 85k's, more like 55k.

I would say that with a few k's saved here and there, they will soon add up to a substantial saving.

My battery box which is now permanently fixed in the back weighs 43kg. Its a top bit of gear though.
No point having a dual battery system that can't cope.

Hey Drover,

Thanks for that.

Yeah - I haven't gone over this in real detail myself - What I'll do is edit the list based on the comments from Ye Experienced Ones.

I looked at the checkerplate - Dolium have weights as follows:

Bonnet plates 4kg LR Def 2.4i Prot Bonnet Black - Dolium Pty Ltd (http://www.dolium.com.au/view/page/120/item/LRPB2b.html)

Sills and Corners 4kg LR Def Prot Sills & Corner - Dolium Pty Ltd (http://www.dolium.com.au/view/page/120/item/LRPSC.html)
(5kg for a 130)

Maybe this is a generous guesstimate from Dolium.

Ill see if I can find some weights for the extra battery +box.

The bullbar was an ARB steel bar I believe - I'll try and chase that up also.

cheers!

kenleyfred,

/agree

Won't be compromising on the battery. I'll search these forums for some advice when I get the chance.

So your complete rig - 2x Batteries + Box = 43kg?

Just taking a quick glance around, for example, a fullriver drycell battery is listed here at 25kg on it's own ULTIMATE 4WD BATTERY DRY CELL AGM 1050AMP FULLRIVER - eBay 4x4 Accessories, Exterior, Car Parts, Accessories, Cars, Bikes, Boats. (end time 02-May-10 19:00:24 AEST) (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ULTIMATE-4WD-BATTERY-DRY-CELL-AGM-1050AMP-FULLRIVER-/300344781243)

I think you have overestimate the fuel, I think the Specific Gravity of Diesel is around 0.82, so that's only about 140Kgs

My battery is 120amphour fitted to a bullet proof battery box. on its own it is 43kg. Although now needing replacement the battery has handled the engel in hot conditions for up to 4 days.
The extra variety of sockets up front are handy.

some of my rough and ready numbers

flooded cell batteries (not counting the mounting or cabling)
2kg per 10 AH for a starter
1.5kg per 10 AH for a deep cycle

Diesel weighs 1KG per l but that includes the tank weight
Water weighs 1.1kg per L and that includes the tank weight

My medium level tool box complete weighs in at 60KG (includes jacks)
my medium level recovery gear weighs in at 40KG (includes the small tirfor)

your spare tyre weight is high, my steel splits for fozzy with the Heavy duty rubber on them dont weigh 40Kg a piece as is your weight for the swing away. The one on big red shipped at 8.5kg including packaging.

I weigh adults in at 120KG a piece for short trips and 150 a piece for long trips, this includes their food and baggage. thats based on the average australian standard of 95KG for a clothed male. (thats an old standard but it still works for people of my build)

if your shelving weighs in at 60Kg pull it apart, take out all the lead from inside the steel tubing, then replace it with ally/wood stuff. I havent yet made a storage system that weighs in at over 40KG (not counting a cargo barrier) and most simple false decks with 2 draws top out at about 20KG.

Fully decked for 2 up touring I never got big red to weigh in at more than about 2.8T fully bombed up but then I never needed a long range fuel tank.

Excellent response and info - thanks very much for taking the time to post this.

Re the wheel carrier - the one from Dolium that I was thinking of using comes in at 19kg... LR Def Spare Wheel Mnt Rear - Dolium Pty Ltd (http://www.dolium.com.au/view?command=cman_view_webpage&webpage_id=120&pkey=dolium&inp_item_id=LRSWCD)

KK thanks Craig, you're right.

I'll go with the 1kg as inclusive of fuel+tank weight as suggested elsewhere here.

Cheers!

the rar bar on big red was fabbed up from exhaust tubing so not much weight...

I strongly suggest you look into making one up yourself if you want to get the weight savings...

If you dont mind a redesign and repositioning the spare wheel a bit I think it can probabley be gotten down to 5-6Kg for a swingaway.

But Have a think about how you're going to make the swingaway because with a little effort you can make on carry a fair bit more than just the tyre.

I usually like to squeeze at least a small air tank in the wasted space behind the wheel, a mount for a floodlight pole, hook up points for a swag. Go really advanced and you can get a table frame, gas bottle mount, jack + base plate mount, highlift and shovel mount all in one place. And its still not too much of a PITA to get the wheel off.

I just sold a winch bar from a 2004 Defender 110 X-treme and it weighed 48Kg.

Duke, Is the spare tyre a second spare? Remember the original spare comes under the original weight! Same goes for the cranking battery.
My defender has pretty much what yours has, without camping gear or food, its 2.87t. Including rooftop tent, 2nd spare, recovery gear, 163L fuel, 40L water, steel rims, 33" tyres, and fridge and slide.... safe to say yours should just come in under the limit. All weighed at the army base.

Hey Geckos,

Thanks for that. Man that is a sweet rig you have there!

Yeah is a second spare, though I had just about talked myself out of it - I really don't want to put much weight on the roof.

I don't suppose you have the weights for those drawers from when they were sent up to you?

How's the roof top tent? You happy with that? SWMBO reckons it looks fun, but once again I'm not thrilled with weight up high.

One of my concerns is that work may want me to put an external roll cage on - which is also gonna add some weight (no idea how much just yet)

Really appreciate the comments.

Thanks Mellow Yellow,

So the 55kg is prolly closer to the real weight.

Does anybody actually know what an ARB deluxe steel bar weighs?

This sounds like some great advice.

I've seen some suggestions for slide/swing out tailgate tables - but I guess I'll try and get my weights sorted first.

My defender has pretty much what yours has,

Unfortunately i don't have one yet... :(

I'm putting together a budget submission for work, and they want details. they're prepared to cover everything, but they also want weight for some reason - hence my faffing around...

A new 200 series would be over its GVM if you filled up the tank.

At least with a Defender you have options.

Bushie,

Sweet! Thanks very much - I KNEW there had to be something here on the boards I was missing. Appreciate you pointing it out. I'll pull it apart once I've had some sleeeeeeeeep.
