Can anyone tell me what purpose the heat shield ( part no.587095) serves ,that's bolted to the inlet manifold on a 2 1/4 L engine and extends downwards to the starter motor? It's usually missing.

G'day B.S.F Nut :)

It is to stop the exhaust heat flowing back and heating the firewall and the passenger foot well :( and it is quite effective in doing so.
a bit hard to find in Aust now as most people took them off that chucked them away, :( then complained that the passenger's feet were cooking:D
