Hi!
I have a mate wanting advice on buying a freelander its a 98 4 cylinder 2 letre diesel with 277000 on the clock, just wanting to know how many kms on diesel engines people are getting before head problems, rebuilds etc. i had a 4.2 v6 diesel patrol and that was an absolute tank with 400 000kms on it but im just a bit unsure about the smaller engine. just dont want to surgest a dud to him.

The early 2.0 diesel donks are bomb proof...

I don't know how many km is too many as I have never, ever heard of anyone needing to get the head off, let alone re-build one!!??!!

The only agro you have is changing the cam belts.

Mine has now done 270,000 and the engine is still running well - smokes on cold start but that because of normal overfueling on start and some work is needed on the injectors - maybe just some cleaner is needed in the fuel.

Timing/injection pump belts are required every 80,000km and are a bit of a pain but doable at home.

I have a freelander diesel with 230,000klms on it and it is still going strong.
A customer of ours has 430,000klms from new - never even had a head gasket!

Just make sure the car is in good condition and that it's been maintained properly.

A 4.2 V6 patrol, must be a 2012 model :wasntme:.
