View Full Version : Gumnut - 1953 Series 1 80"

Well I now have three series vehicles (though the others are series 3). My wife had fallen in love with the 80" vehicles as soon as she saw one so when I showed her the pictures of this one in the markets we decided very quickly to just buy it. Went down to Wodonga with trailer in tow on the weekend and brought it back. Hopefully will have it registered this week as it has been a daily driver. Could be some work required on the brakes but I have not had time to check it out properly. It is not 100% original but the changes are improvements as far as making it easier to drive go. It has a 2.25 petrol in it which runs very well.

Heya Tim and Wellie - does Gumnut have a middle seat? And is that the exhaust outlet coming out in front of the passenger side rear wheel? I just had a new muffler fitted on mine so it's now on the driver side behind the rear wheel.

She looks great - what colour is it? Kind of looks like gloss olive drab in the pics!

I hope you can bring her on the weekend. I seem to have started something with Matilda - the entire club will be driving S1's soon. :D

The tool brackets are an interesting mix of some ex mil and some that have been purpose built. Note the shovel holder.
I must admit that I didn't pick this from the photographs, I went and snuck a personal viewing the other day. The whole unit is very nicely done and as a result is a very user friendly little toy but still retains it's heritage lines.
The following shot of an enthusiastic new owner seems to remind me of a Hannah-Barbera cartoon character of the earlier years, although that particular vehicle I believe was foot powered whereas this one is 2.25l Rover powered.

Hi Dan,

It does have a middle seat but it needs recovering and fitting in place. Yes the exhaust comes out in front of the passenger rear wheel. It can be a little noisy but I think that goes with things like this. I think "Gloss Olive Drab" is about it, that's what Glen reckoned as well :). Not sure if we will bring her on the drive yet. Welly has some issues with not being able to lock it up and so on and there is definitely some work required on brakes. I reckon anyone who can work out the switches and buttons to start it will be pretty good and if I take out the rotor button as well then it isn't going anywhere while we sleep.

Tim.

Well, you can't lock mine either. How about we park them next to each other and you install your dog between them both? :D

As for Gumnut - It's a real cracker I reckon - the noise is an S1 thing - it's a case of earrplugs and HTFU, I've been told.

I was hoping you might be in her, as otherwise I'll be the only Mr Magoo in a 1950's rig this weekend. But you want it to be safe - and I guess you still need to get her registered.

Looking forward to the weekend anyway, see you then. :)

I was looking at some of these at Tyrepower in Queanbeyan on Tuesday as I was getting new tyres for the D3. He reckoned he could do them for $175 each which seemed a little dear for my liking.

They look great. I wonder if they come in a 650 or 700 x 16. 7.50's are alittle large for a REAL S1 . I have 205's on Leon and they are too wide really for the rims but the right circumference.

A quick search on the web and it appears they only come in a 700x15 and some other odd sizes.

Glen has organised for me - five 6 X 16 tyres, non directional types as per the original spec - they will arrive in 4 weeks. $150.00 each.

Hi gumnut,

Love it, looks good, hope you have fun with your new ride!
Cool setup. Nice colour, with Pioneer tool brackets & a 2.25 motor!
Does your head hit the canvas top?
what brand tyres are those?

thanks for sharing,

Cheers,

Chris;)

Well it is now Queensland registered. Personalised plates have been bought but have not arrived yet so standard ones will live on there for now.

And yes my head does hit the canvas top but if I slouch down a bit it is ok. That puts my knees somewhere around my ears though which hurts my buggered knees when I push the clutch in. Life is always full of compromises though :).

Will have a look at the brakes this afternoon hopefully and see if we take it away this weekend.

Yep the Fiat is leaf sprung and has been going through a ground up restoration since I got it in about '87:eek: may get it finished, but the body is well buried at the back of the shed. I think this already has the 25+ years on Matilda.

Ah Scallops I try not to go Dunga style - you need to see others for that.

Back on topic, sorry Tim - hopefully we'll see it out at the weekend.

I agree it would be great to see the Fiat going, really should start working on it again, mmm electrics. Now which box to start looking for parts in:o

Nope no other 4wd's just the rangies, nothing else would be suitable - I did check with CC early on. If only we still had the Willys Jeep, that would've mixed in well  it was left hand drive also:twisted:

Well I don't think that we will be bringing it out this weekend. I am not happy with the radiator. Coolant level has dropped down below the top of the fins with just a few fairly short drives around over the last couple of days and there are quite a few of the fins missing. Probably could do with replacing it before taking it on a three day trip. Will have to take a Game I think.

Hey Shaun - when complete it should look similar to this. This one is not mine. Personally I wouldn't paint the radiator the same colour as the body.

reminds me of when I did a headgasket in an older car, and noticed the level down, my young lad suggested (helpfully)

PS:- I must admit that when I first saw it I thought "who slaughtered that??!" sacriledge etc etc......

Thanks Digger,

I know what you mean, I knew it wasn't original when I bought it but I liked what had been done and I still prefer to have one that has not gone to the scrap heap. I may one day get another and do it all original.

I have a couple of other series vehicles I can take this weekend (both SWB Games so still a little out of the ordinary :)) so I think I will leave Gumnut at home until I am certain of the mechanical state. A short trip would not worry me but this is three days driving so I would rather be safe than sorry.

Well Gumnut was still here when we got home so I assume she said no to fitting the towbar. But then you would have had to get past those two vicious dogs (and yes he has already marked his new property :)).

And since it is still here I suppose I had better fix the radiator :(.
