I've just had a ballpark quote from my local 4X4 place on two different tanks for our 96 Deefer:

LRA 125L replacement $1300 fitted

Long Ranger 120L replacement $1200 fitted

Am I getting a decent deal?

Also, I assume these things fit okay with a Hayman Reece tow kit?

That sounds about right.

There was a guy on ebay recently manufacturing long range tanks for a range of 4WDs and his were around the $700-$800 + fitting.

A cheaper option to try to achieve near the same capacity is to retain the original tank and fit the small tank that goes under the rear RHS guard (about 35 litre capacity depending on model chosen). Long Range Automotive ake one, and Dolium & Opposite lock import the South African one from FRONT RUNNER 4x4 :: Roof Racks, 4x4 Accessories South Africa, Rooftop Tents, Car Fridges, Extra Fuel Tanks, Winches, Towbars (http://www.frontrunner.co.za)

South Africa Post will post up to 30kg, so if you have a friend in SA, it may be cheaper to get one sent over.

I always thought Long Range tanks were too expensive, and for that price, I'd just carry a couple of Jerry cans. But now that I own a Defender with 150litre fuel capacity, I'd easily spend the money on a long range tank for a future vehicle. It means you don't risk getting dirty or expensive fuel in out of the way places, you only refuel once a month around town, and you can drive all day without having to stop for fuel, which means your lunch stops can be in a national park instead of a town. Also there's no risk of fuel on hands and clothes from refuelling in the bush.

I think OxExplor do belly tanks(Site vendor). Adding two of these and keeping your original you'd carry more fuel.

The original tank is split, hence a new one :D Although I have been thinking of getting an aux tank as well as the replacement

Hey Treads,

I had a LRA (Long range Automotives) tank fitted in May this year to my PUMA. Cost was 1,100 for the tank and $255 for fitting. Total $1355.00

Capacity is 135Lt and can be fitted with the standard tow bar. The tank is very well made and the fit is neat

The fuel range now is well over 1000km on the highway and couldn't be happier.

I have put in a Poly rv auxilary diesel tank and a pump. It holds an extra 130 litres and I pump into my ome tank when it's low. It's under the tray all up I have 205 litres capacity.

I wanted to forgo having to gave Jerry cans on the back on my hunting trips.

All up with tank, pump and fitting it owes me around$600

contacting front runner direct you will save about $400 on their under rear seat 62L tank....about $700 delivered to nearest major airport......137L is a fair bit of touring

Take out the tank and have it repaired or take it to a sheet metal fabricator to get a quote to copy it or made deeper for extra capacity. Bellbird sheet metal in Taragindi Brisbane previously made land rover fuel tanks.

Long Ranger also do an 80litre sill tank, you do however loose the box under the drivers seat.

With the Mulgo sill tanks - do you lose the under seat boxes as well?

I was on the understanding that you don't, which is why they were appealing to me - air compressor etc are located under the drivers seat.

My understanding is that with Mulgo's sill tanks and the Front Runner sill tanks (imported by Dolium and available from Opposite Lock, and possibly Mulgo), both sit below the seat box. They are about 40-45 litres each. The Dolium ones are about $1000 each plus fitting. You can certainly get left and right ones from Dolium though left ones are special order.

Agree - he fitted a 45L Dolium extra tank in my RHS rear quarter panel. Works seamlessly and no reduction at all in clearance.

And cheaper than a replacement tank - under a grand all up from memory.

Mulgo tanks are below the seat/battery box - not lower than the chassis. Passenger side 40l / Driver side 60l.

The previous owner of my car can't recall the details of the 75 litre drivers side sill tank on my 110. I can't seem to find one like it in any aux tank threads. It was installed either by ARB or the dealer.

It is a stand-alone system with a separate filler pipe just in front for the rear wheel and you can switch from one tank to the other from in the cab. Under seat storage is unaffected.

The advantages are that if you have a problem in one tank (dirty fuel, leaks etc) you can survive on the other tank.

If I knew what it was I'd recommend it.

Michael, what brand of tank do you have. Is it one tank at 150lt or a multi tank setup. What Defer do you have?

thanks

Reviving an old thread...

I've got a 2009 110 Defender Wgn with the Factory Fuel Tank along with the 45ltr Inner Guard Tank installed. Just wondering if there is a Long Range Replacement Tank available where I can still retain the use of my 45ltr Inner Guard Tank?

BTW... I've also already have RHS Aux Sill Fuel tank installed as well...

Mine has a 120 litre Long Ranger main tank. I've never actually checked if it's possible, but there seems to be plenty of space where the 45 litre tank would go. I assume it would just gravity feed into the main tank.

Which version of Towbar do u have? the Factory one (which is the one I have) or the Hayman Reece straight square box type? Also do u still have the rear folding step installed?

Something called a Trailboss, installed by the original owner, who also did the fuel tank. I don't know anything about it.
No rear step.

They only look like they do the Inner Guard Fuel Tank & I've already got one, so that's not what I'm looking.... Plus from what I can see with the inner guard tank - u are limited to a 32' tyre and sometime in the future I'd like to upgrade my tyre size from the 265/78/16 to a 255/85/16 and with the inner guard tank in I reckon the tyres will hit the tank under compression. Running offset rims "may" avoid this though...

I was looking to get this LRA tank as it fits with the HR towbar (angled not square). Looks like it would clash with your existing aux tank though.

Yeah, I saw that one but yes, it wouldn't fit with my setup unless I ditched the Inner Guard Tank..

I dont own a 110 but with my previous 4WD I got a person to make me a LR tank as no one had ever made one for a Great Wall before. The company was Balistic Engineering down Geelong way. I sent him the measurements, paid a deposit then when he had the tank made I went down and we fitted it off. He even made up a new filler neck with two pipes so I could fill the OEM tank, then fill up the LR tank. Tank was 120ltr and from memory it was $450 (in 2012) all done and fitted. At the time Brown Davis, Oposite Lock etc were all in the region of $1000+ for mainstream make tanks. I never had any problems with the tank or fittings and used a little 12V pump to transfer fuel to main tank. Maybe worth a try.
