I need to get stronger axles. I was out playing today and got stuck in a rut
I need to tell you that I have been getting some tyre wear, took the car into the wheel alignment guys and the camber is out of spec, I had already cheaked the kingpins and bearings and they where good so it just leaves the axle housing being bent.
So I need a straight housing and I will brace it and I then need to fill it with goodies.
My car is a county so has better CV's, can anyone tell me how good the standard county CV's are. I want to build a new front end with a locker so if I fit the locker and new stronger axles how long will the CV's last.

Mate, The county cv's AEU2522 are about the strongest you will get other than paying a fortune for Ashcroft ones. What you need is to get hold of a front axle assembly from an RFSV, and put stronger axles like Jack Macnamara or maxi drive type. You wont bend that axle housing. Other alternative is to straighten and strengthen your existing one. Isuzurover (Ben) has a thread on one he did-check it out. Add a 4pinion carrier like the RFSV or 6by has or a trutrac or Quaife and you're in business. Tim may be able to help with a replacement housing. Might be up that way over the next few weeks - will give you a call when I know dates.....Brian

No worries, will catch you next time. Changing axles and fitting a locker/truetrac and bracing the housing is probably the best/cheapest way to go unless you can nick a front axle from a norforce 110. Bending standard housings in Isuzus is very common. I have a 6by front housing that I am going to get modified//shortened and fit to mine one day. I wouldn,t worry about the cv's,they are very strong. With the cold weather I hope your'e going north for exercises.....Brian

The AEU2522 are not cheap either, I had some county cv put in my defender it the cost was more than the locker that went in to the front housing. The Ashcroft ones are very competetive at the current exchange rate.

Mate, when you say "out of spec" for the camber, what camber angle are we talking about ?
Most 110/Defenders I've seen sport somewhere between 0.5 and 1.0* of negative camber, yet the book calls out 0.0*
If it's 1* I wouldn't bother worrying about it, but by all means laminate/truss the front end if using it hard, they can and do bend.

Yeah the genuine ones seem to be pretty expensive but the after market ones you can pickup pretty cheap, around the $100-$120 each mark:cool:
and they seem to still be pretty strong!!

Yep sure are, havn't broken one yet:cool:
My boss was running them in his v8 fender on 36's (with lockers) and eventually broke one trying to drive a slippery rock ledge at full noise with the wheels at full lock:angel: but he was running them for ages before he broke one, now he has ashcrofts.

If you have the means to truss/ laminate a housing.
Would it be worth making a jig and trying to draw (some hot welds across the tube) the short (right) side back to 0.4* to match the long side.
Youll need a jig to hold the housing straight when you truss the housing anyways - playing with the current housing can be a practice run!

Im supprised no one has mentioned the Rover tracks CVs and axles yet, if they are still the same price you get axles and CVs for 660usd, add shipping and conversion and there still cheap as. I broke county CVs but i havnt broken a rover tracks CV....

I have looked them up and seems like a good option. timing is not perfect as my wife has just left her job last week. I would like to fit a locker at the same time.

As has just been said, speak to Rovertracks, or Ashcroft. The county stuff is a waste of time by comparison.

I bought some longtracks from Keith a few weeks ago,and they were $660 U.S.
You can't compare them with county C.V's,and you get the stronger axles as well.
Half the price of just the Ashcroft C.V's without axles

One down side to the rover tracks if your using a county front axle, you need to switch the hubs and stubs for the 24 spline narrow bearing spacing type front end from a disco or defender, not hard to do and if you can find the parts cheap(i had a mate give me a d1 axle) its well worth the hassle.

I got a special deal, because Keith already had a spare set here in Aust.
But I think the delivery is normally about $160.
But with the Aust. dollar now high,it should be a fair bit less.
Well worth the cost.No more worrying about when the next axle or C.V is going to let go.

Keith makes some really nice gear, and really knows his rovers.
I am going to buy some rear axles and steering linkages from him very soon.

So dose that mean a different drive flange, I like the ones I have.

Here is what I did to my front housing. Very happy with the result.

As mine is more of a tourer, I think I am unlikely to break the 2522's. Though I definitely don't baby it offroad.

cheers Ben I looked yours up and I will most likely copy what you have done.
I am still not sure which way to go with the CV's and axles, the Rovertracks are a great price but I like the stub axles and hubs I have as they are a wider spacing ie better support on the hubs, and I have ashcroft flanges for the hubs. tough decisions.:D

Well the last couple of weeks have been very busy getting parts and bracing another diff housing. It has also been a busy weekend, removing the old diff and setting up the locker, removing the old housing and fitting the new one. I fitted new radius arm bushes whilst I was there, and fitted the new axles to the county CV's. I have some new county CV's coming as extras, I'll see how it goes, the other reason is if I break these CVs the break is contained in the housing and this is allot less work as stripping the whole diff housing to clean the metal out. But it all went well, I am surprised at how much it effects the steering when engaged, it is much reduced both ways but is better to the left.
