I need stronger axles and CV's

I need to get stronger axles. I was out playing today and got stuck in a rut

I need to tell you that I have been getting some tyre wear, took the car into the wheel alignment guys and the camber is out of spec, I had already cheaked the kingpins and bearings and they where good so it just leaves the axle housing being bent.

So I need a straight housing and I will brace it and I then need to fill it with goodies.

My car is a county so has better CV's, can anyone tell me how good the standard county CV's are. I want to build a new front end with a locker so if I fit the locker and new stronger axles how long will the CV's last.

Mate, The county cv's AEU2522 are about the strongest you will get other than paying a fortune for Ashcroft ones. What you need is to get hold of a front axle assembly from an RFSV, and put stronger axles like Jack Macnamara or maxi drive type. You wont bend that axle housing. Other alternative is to straighten and strengthen your existing one. Isuzurover (Ben) has a thread on one he did-check it out. Add a 4pinion carrier like the RFSV or 6by has or a trutrac or Quaife and you're in business. Tim may be able to help with a replacement housing. Might be up that way over the next few weeks - will give you a call when I know dates.....Brian

Hi Brian cheers, the more I think about it I will just fit the 24 spline stronger axles to a locker and run the county CV's until they break.

the axle housing I will most likey piliage from my old county I gave it to Tim but I called him today said it's ok. but yes I will check the thread out as I will brace the next one.

when you come up mate I won't be here I am going away on excersise for 5 weeks we are leaving on the 14 AUG, sorry mate would have been great to meet up next time hopfully.

Changing axles and fitting a locker/truetrac and bracing the housing is probably the best/cheapest way to go unless you can nick a front axle from a norforce 110. Bending standard housings in Isuzus is very common. I have a 6by front housing that I am going to get modified//shortened and fit to mine one day. I wouldn,t worry about the cv's,they are very strong. With the cold weather I hope your'e going north for exercises.....Brian

Mate, when you say "out of spec" for the camber, what camber angle are we talking about ?

Most 110/Defenders I've seen sport somewhere between 0.5 and 1.0* of negative camber, yet the book calls out 0.0*
If it's 1* I wouldn't bother worrying about it, but by all means laminate/truss the front end if using it hard, they can and do bend.

Yeah the genuine ones seem to be pretty expensive but the after market ones you can pickup pretty cheap, around the $100-$120 each mark
and they seem to still be pretty strong!!

Yep sure are, havn't broken one yet

My boss was running them in his v8 fender on 36's (with lockers) and eventually broke one trying to drive a slippery rock ledge at full noise with the wheels at full lock but he was running them for ages before he broke one, now he has ashcrofts.
