View Full Version : Gets hot in cabin with windows down

Hey all,
Something that's been bugging me for a bit, just wandered if there's an obvious cause/fix. Have a 1995 Disco V8 manual.
If drive about with the windows down the centre consul gets very hot along with the footwell and eventually the whole cabin. With the windows up this doesn't seem an issue. But generally need the aircon on instead as kinda hot up here.
Any clues?
Cheers,
Mac

With the windows down, you're allowing airflow through the cabin.
Maybe this airflow is sucking up some heat from somewhere on it's way into the cabin.
With the windows up, you're not getting a through flow of air, therefore no hot air is getting in.

Thanks Scouse,
Yeah I had sort of guessed that it was pulling in engine heat. This the second mid nineties Disco I had that has this "issue" I suppose I was really being lazy and hoping someone else had flagged it as a problem and sorted it out. Reckon I should be looking for missing grommets/inserts or gaskets in the firewall or transmission tunnel.

Looks like there is a big rubber insert under the consul through which the gear lever goes, it has holes in it that look Iike screw holes, but there are none there. Should there be a plate or bracket that holds the thing down, just putting screws in doesn't look like it would make a good seal.

Wish I could get the cabin of my RRC to heat up like your Disco - Down here in Melbourne we could use a bit of warmth at the moment...:D

i had something simular where the centre console would heat up by rh side i traced it the the foam around the heater matrix where it slots in had come adrift so the air was blowing striaght out the side and not throught the heater assy, this was causing the console by the cigar lighter to heat up even melted a bic pin

Thanks Scouse,
I guess that's it, at some point this engine has been out of the truck, if the plate is riveted it may have been left off. I know my las truck had a recon engine and the same issue.

Is it just the climate control being on, with the windows down if it is cooler outside than in the climate control will try (very hard) to heat the cabin up, starting from the bottom vents this will heat up the console and foot wells???
Cheers Keith

If you had this problem you'd know, literally will melt a mars bar in the consul cubby

I don't think you'll ever fix the hot cubby box - I have the same issue with my RR. All the heat from the gearbox/transfer case just comes up & cooks it.

1.Try fitting some insulation/heat reflecting foil under the centre consol
2. Check /replace all the grommets / plates to make sure they secure in the holes they covering
