On a full tank I only return 700k's. Can anyone better this? Am looking for a long range tank but cannot find a supplier. Can anyone help? I am going to fit a towbar when the tank is in, wether it's an add on or replacement main unit.

Mine does around the same consumption, used in heavy traffic with heavy right foot. It's a TD5

That's a good number out of 71 litres of usable tank capacity:

http://www.aulro.com/afvb/90-110-130-defender-county/74047-puma-std-fuel-tank-undocumented-5l-reserve-total-80lt-2.html

There are a few options for additional tanks.

I opted for the 45 Litre auxiliary tank available from Opposite Lock.

I generally get 8-9l/100kms in the City from my 2.4TDCi, and generally about 800kms.

I've run from Melbourne (South Wharf) to the Dog on the Tuckerbox without refuelling, which I think is about 600 as well. I generally get 10.5-11.9l/100kms on the motorway.

I haven't done anything about a auxiliary tank, but had been looking at the one from Opposite Lock as well.

Boy - 8 to 9L/100 is fantastic. I can't get mine any better than 10.5 or 11L/100 (2007 Puma) but I live in a hilly area.

They are supposed to get better after they have a few more KMs on them (20,000....?)

On a recent trip to Port Lincoln (relatively flat terrain) sitting on 85 to 90km/h I got 9.1L/100km.

Light came on around 680km and I filled up at 692km with 63litres.

On the way back I was around 100km/h and got 12L/100km :(

Just wondering about how far I could actually go after the light comes on?

With reference to the link I posted above I was able to extract 100km at an average over the trip for the tanks of 10.5l/100km from the light going on and the engine management causing the prescribed misfire in the engine.

As it was towards the end of the trip the consumption was probably closer to 11.5 given that it was made up of 110 kph and city driving.

I carried a 5 litre jerry of diesel just in case I stopped just short of a servo.

You have to be very sure of your consumption if you go beyond the yellow light.

I get around 650 to the tank and have also heard that they improve at around 15000 - 20000. As for the tow bar I have been told that the LR towbars can not be used with the long ranger tanks due to some positioning issues. The ARB bar is compatible but remember if you buy one from ARB the price quoted is for bar only. The wiring harness has to be sourced from LR and you will also loose your rear step as the ARB bar goes over the fittment holes.

Best for me is just under 9L/100km, worst is 18.5L/100km. Normally get around 11.5-13L/100km. Hot weather doesn't help and there's a lot of it up here. Best fuel consumption was in Tassie last winter.

At 130kph on the Stuart Hwy... not good economy :(

I am getting 11l/100km with a roofrack on my Puma 90. Without the roofrack, it was 10l/100km.

There is also a rumour doing the rounds that LR sets the turbo to underboost at the factory and the stealers are supposed to set it correctly at the first service. Apparently they do this to let the engines run in without stressing them.

At 8l/100km I'd be checking the accuracy of the odometer. From what I understand they usually over read showing more mileage than you're actually doing thereby giving you better economy than you're actually getting.

Unless, the distances you're covering match the distances shown on the ODO, which mine do.

I don't literally mean 8.0l/100kms. The best I've seen is 8.35......, I'm generally 8.9 in the city.

Not bad. Mine gets about 390 on the hwy and 200 in the bush. So you should be happy with 700. He he. Mine is a v8 auto tissue box mind you. Lol

10.5 per 100k's is about what I'm getting.
As mentioned before you'll have to match up you tow bar and long range fuel tank. Not all tow bars suit the larger under slung replacement tanks.
Also some tow bar interfere with the rear step.
There are three types of tanks I know of. 45L sub tanks, the "longranger' type replacement tanks and 'Mulgo' wing tanks.
The 'Mulgo' wing tanks look real interesting. Anyone here got one?

I usually get between 10 and 12l/100km depending on the situation in an 07 puma. I have managed to do 120km on the fuel light so it does come on fairly early. I expect based on fuel tank size there was still a bit to go. I have fitted the OL 45l tank. There are two weak points with the tank.

1. the mudflap is bolted to a guard welded to the bottom of the tank. I have seen this ripped off on another defender and the tank had a hole in it.

2. the hose that drains to the main tank is very exposed to branches etc.

I presume that you mean 1200 km.

You can probably get another 100 km once the light comes on

So 1300 km out of 116 effective litres is a very good result 4 is kept in reserve for dire circumstances.

I've managed 1065 km.

I get on average 10 litres / 100km. I did before any accessory was added - I do now, with bullbar, roofrack awning, shovel, Mickey T 33 Muds.....etc etc. Empty, fully loaded - doesn't matter - 10l / 100km.

On my trip around Oz - with 800kg on board, and having driven over maybe one third of the country at 10km/h with the tyres at 14psi - I still got 9.3 km /100km

These trucks are brilliant on the juice.

PS - I also use the Dolium (OL supplied) aux fuel tank. Gravity feeds into main tank so no issues with warranty, despite what some have said on this point.

the warning light on all of the diesels is sufficient to get you 90Km based on the sticker consumption of the vehicle.

if you drive nicer you go further you hoon it you get less.

my record in a td5 110 Extreme is 1000Km to the standard tank BUT that was done under an exceptionally good set of circumstances that you would not ever see IRL... my best repeatable run is about 850, the last 50 with the warning light on.

in reality 700K from any post series diesel is a good planning range.

Yesterday, I did a run from Canberra to Rockdale (Sydney) and back in my Puma D90. Have a roof rack and sat on 120 kph much of the time on the freeway (I know, I was speeding, but time was short). Any way 10.5 l per 100 km. I am sure I could do a lot better if I was not such a rev-head, but red Defenders just ask to be driven hard.

Cheers
