Hello Can someone tell me if a true trac diff in the rear of a disco 1 deisel makes noises as it goes around corners or if you are reversing and turning at the same time? Noises as in clunck clunck clunck.
I have been told this is normal as its always locked while in the straight ahead position and disconnects when turning which is the clunking I hear as it is disconnecting.
I have jacked up vehicle and if i turn one wheel in the forward direction the the wheel on the other side turns in the same direction, not opposite directions like a normal open diff. The noise is louder sometimes than others moreso if its cold.
Reason I asked is I sold a disco and the person who bought it has been told the diff is stuffed, but i had no problem with it apart from the noise when i drove it albeit not for very long. I dont know if the mechanic who is diagnosing knows that this is a locking diff.
Advice please
ta
Brad:)

The diff sounds a lot more like the Detroit Locker rather than the TruTrac

Thankyou this is what I needed to know as I got the disco not knowing what was in it and have been told it was a truetrac, but you may be right
Thanks

I had a true track in my Disco 1.

If you fitted the full locker to the back which is most likely then yes you get the ratchting. I found the slower I went around round about’s in particular the louder" it seemed to sounded.

I also fitted their soft locker to the front. I did find at slow roundabouts that the vehicle tended to shudder as the lockers ratchted. Just engaged the clutch

Great bit of gear. Perhaps, wish I had fitted to the rear of my 2001 TD5 Def in stead of ARB.
