During its rebuild my 2a seems to have dropped one of its plates that the top hinge bolts fix to.

Can anyone suggest what to do about it?

Could a long bolt be put through to the next layer of bulkhead with a plate stopping the sheet metal being crushed?

The top hinge plate is in a square tube about six inches long and open at the bottom. It should be possible to feed a bit of flexible wire down it and pull up a replacement plate - I was able to get my fingers into the bottom of the tube from the engine side. Once you have it up into place, you have to hold it there, which may present more problems if you want to retain the ability to adjust the hinge, but this would also be a problem with your idea. If you can manage without this ability, a suitable adhesive would work. An alternative would be to make the replacement long enough to reach the bottom of the tube, where it could be temporarily held, for example with a bulldog clip, or even a large dollop of blutack, until the hinge bolts are started.

Hope this helps,

John

Thanks for that. I couldn't find the correct part listed on any supplier's website.
Is the correct name for it a hinge plate?

If I was to manufacture another plate what size andtype of thread is used?

Really appreciate the help.

The plate is no listed as a separate part in the parts manual, so I can't help on the name.

I am pretty certain the fasteners are 5/16"UNF

The plate isn't a separate part, it is part of the door rail and is theoretically held in place by a piece of steel welded over the plate, which allows the plate to move around.

The interior of the door rail has no rust protection, so you can expect the steel holding the plate in place to have rusted away - it's only about 1mm thick.

I lost one of my plates when I had the firewall off, but was able to retrieve it because you can get inside the rail when the firewall is off.

The bolts are 5/16" UNF, and the message is to never take out more than one at a time for any given hinge.

You might end up having to cut a hole in the rail, then putting the plate in, then welding the hole back up. Whatever happens, it'll be a **** of a job. :(
