Been looking around for a clean Defender. My budget is only around $15-20k so will be looking at probably at a mid to late 90's model. Most of them Ive seen have mid 200's k's on them. Have seen a couple with high 100's. I'm prepared to look at something with 150k's on it but geez, $20k + seems like a lot to spend on a vehicle with 200k's plus mileage. I've seen an extreme, an absolute beauty, great condition for $24k, has 190k's on it?

10000000000000000's ;)

most diesel blocks are good to 500K heads usually make about 250-300.

this assumes good maintenance and a diesel friendly driving style. Full cast iron engines have been known to crack the million between rebuilds.

Piece of string question!

Buy cheap and spend some coin on it that way you know what you have.;)

A 200/300Tdi will easily exceed 500K with good maintenance and sensible use, Isuzu 3.9 easily that and quite common to see 1,000,000km in trucks.

As Dave said, heads/ gasket need to be looked at around 250 to 300K but apart from that no worries.

tdi may need bottom end bearings done at around 300.. You can usually judge how an engine is looked after by the rest of the vehicle...

What about the 3.9ltr Isuzu engine?

Its the eveready of the engine world.

it just keeps going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going , and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going, and going and then you give it a rebuild and then you start reading this sentence from the beginning again.

If you strung all of the collective egos of all toyota drivers as a consecutive time span the isuzu 3.9 would be the only thing I can think of that would outlast it.

Id suggest that they will still be running when the earth is sucked into a black hole but that would be ridiculous, It still needs air.

, Dave, you're out of control! :p:p:p

Very true statement though, my 3.9 is about to be transplanted into its 3rd vehicle:D

Hi my 1994 110 has 367,000 on it and going like a train but it has been looked after. Another Tdi down here has over 600,000 and going the same. All depends on how they have been looked after and regularly serviced.

David

or get a good one that doesn't need the work done in the first place?

parts and fixing is expensive...

My 96 is at 224. You must be working yours harder! I have some steering work to do and as mentioned earlier where I used to get 10.5 l/100k now it's crept up to 11.

Listen about this gasket and head thing, I heard that tdis are never quite the same after the head's been off. Admittedly I think they mean after the head was off coz it was cooked but I feel like keeping it intact for as long as possible and just take good care of cooling system. Am I wrong?

I August 2009 I paid $13K for a 96 Def 110 wagon with 202K on the clock although the odometer over reads by 5%. Problems I've encountered:
Engine - none just the usual maintenance
New brake vacumn pump
New timing belt kit
Centre diff lock - won't engage - just found out 3 weeks ago but could've been like that when I bought it - stupid me:(
RUST - in the font of the floor and base of the firewall on the passenger side where the air cond lines are and in the bottom of all the doors. Pull the mats right out. In fact, look for rust in all the doors, they're known for it.
Replacing worn axles and flanges that create a lot of backlash when releasing the clutch are a cheap fix but obviously more expensive if the slack is in the transfer case/ diffs, etc.
My mileage is 9.5 L/ 100K flogging it hard (cruising in any other car) from Sydney to Port Macquarie and not much different around town as I tend to drive it gently (cruising).
But look for the rust cos it's gotta be the hardest thing to fix.
cheers gerald

Going by what i have seen and read.

TD5 diesel [Archive] - MG-Rover.org Forums (http://forums.mg-rover.org/archive/index.php/t-57002.html)

A Td5 Should if it is a "Good one" Provide over 500,000k. No stupid Timing belts to worry about.

The only worry is the injectors which at one stage will go i'm not sure what there expected life is..

My 4BD1 is coming up to 510,000km. Only thing done to the engine is several thermostats, front and rear crankshaft seals, and regular servicing. Still going strong, but probably needs the injectors checking.
