most diesel blocks are good to 500K heads usually make about 250-300.
this assumes good maintenance and a diesel friendly driving style. Full cast iron engines have been known to crack the million between rebuilds.
Been looking around for a clean Defender. My budget is only around $15-20k so will be looking at probably at a mid to late 90's model. Most of them Ive seen have mid 200's k's on them. Have seen a couple with high 100's. I'm prepared to look at something with 150k's on it but geez, $20k + seems like a lot to spend on a vehicle with 200k's plus mileage. I've seen an extreme, an absolute beauty, great condition for $24k, has 190k's on it?

What about the 3.9ltr Isuzu engine?

Buy cheap and spend some coin on it that way you know what you have.
A 200/300Tdi will easily exceed 500K with good maintenance and sensible use, Isuzu 3.9 easily that and quite common to see 1,000,000km in trucks.
As Dave said, heads/ gasket need to be looked at around 250 to 300K but apart from that no worries.

tdi may need bottom end bearings done at around 300.. You can usually judge how an engine is looked after by the rest of the vehicle...

If you strung all of the collective egos of all toyota drivers as a consecutive time span the isuzu 3.9 would be the only thing I can think of that would outlast it.
Id suggest that they will still be running when the earth is sucked into a black hole but that would be ridiculous, It still needs air.

						Hi my 1994 110 has 367,000 on it and going like a train but it has been looked after. Another Tdi down here has over 600,000 and going the same. All depends on how they have been looked after and regularly serviced.

What are the things to look out for? I notice a lot of people mention rust in the firewall
