Annoying rattle!

I have a 2006 Disco 3 TDV6 to which I have just fitted Cooper ST's, as I do genuinely go 4wd ing and intend to do a lot more. As expected, I get a definite road hum from the chunky tyres, which I can live with, but what is really really annoying is a "harmonic vibration" rattle that comes directly through the steering column, but only at speeds of between 56kmh and 60kmh....the most common speeds around town! My local service guys could not be bothered and said to remove the tyres (der) so I have tried to solve myself with no luck. I have taken off the shroud and all plastic covers, etc but just cant seem to isolate and eliminate the noise. I have had the tyres re balanced and aligned twice, plus I have jammed things in nooks to try and stop the vibration, but it seems that it isnt going to be fixed by anything I can do, rather its a more involved technical solution that is needed. It is really bothering me (and passengers) and I would greatly appreciate some advice. (Or if anyone can point me in the direction of someone who understands 4WD's in Adelaide and wont just suggest taking the tyres off, as if I am an idiot!) Cheers!

Try to narrow it down a bit. Tyre/wheel vibration is typically present around 90 - 100kmh. Does your vibration occur at the same speed what ever gear you are in. It may be in the drivetrain rather than the wheels/tyres.

However you have not said when the vibration started. If it only commenced when fitting the Coopers, I would be looking to swap the rims/tyres over and going for a drive to further isolate the cause. If the vibration started with the fitment of the Coopers, at least try a back to front swap as a start.

Thanks for that....I have since been to the SA wholesaler for Coopers and they have been great in assessing the problem. We did (again) a full balance and rotation and it looks like the tyres are wearing unevenly for some reason - they seem happy enough to consider replacement once I totally eliminate any drivetrain issues.

In my opinion the best place in Adelaide is Sovereign Autos at 238 Angas St - Geoff there owns a D3. (08) 8223 1997. Just picked my D4 up from there having had mods done :D

Thanks for the info, but I have got to tell you these are the guys who had my car for a whole day, and then just told me to take the tyres off when I went to collect the car! Unfortunatley they just did not want to know about about it and thought it was just too hard.....I had big faith in these guys in analysing and working through the problem, but it seemed they went for a quick whizz around the block, heard the hum (not the vibration) of the tyres and parked the car. They may be Land Rover enthusiasts (purists), but they sure were not 4wd enthusiasts! Cheers anyway.....

Just an update re this issue. Cooper Tyres wholesaler have been fantastic and after plenty of tests, etc, they have swapped the tyres (that had done about 15,000kms) with brand new Mickey Thompson ATZ, and the harmonic vibration has gone away! Also makes me realise how much road noise the ST's made! Peace and sanity returned! (Just waiting to replace front steering arms and bushes, as these are worn, plus was alerted to the brake recall after nearly remodelling my garage!). Thanks to all......
