Just wondering if anyone has fitted bonnet/wingtop checkerplate and painted it?
I personally can't stand the look of shiny checkerplate, but can see its uses so was just wondering how noticeable it is when painted.
Cheers.

After trying to find pictures that shows the checker plate and finding it hard, I guess to answer your question, it makes it blend in a lot and not stick out like your saying.
I guess it might also depend what colour we're talking? Sometimes colour coded accessories can look a little naf IMHO :D Did I just insult my car

I am going to paint mine, even though I can order them in black. But maybe white may be the go now you mentioned it.
I'm not a big fan of powder bake and I can't afford (or don't agree) with the price of genuine anodised product.
Aluminium paints well, I'm spraying them buy using a metal etch primer, than a couple coats of epoxy enamel. Nothing flash but light industrial grade paint. If they fade over time, I'll can't see that taping them up and another quick coat will be a drama. I'm expecting 5 years before they look tired.

you can self anodise in whatever colour you like if you get the right grade of ally checker plate, colouring die, some general workshop gear and chemicals and a suitably sized container.

Cheers JohnR, that shows me pretty well.
Looks like it will cover it up pretty well so I may give it a go when I have the spondoolie to buy the things.
Thanks for the anodising info as well Dave.

Black checker on a white Defender looks good - maybe you might want to wait until after the Defender day out before you make a decision. :)

Scollops, your plates finish before the aerial. Is that a special order, or certain brand, or custom.
I see your do to Eric

As the Milk states - these are genuine LR kit - costs, but they are the dog's bollocks. I think you should think long and hard before doing anything - have a look at some on the Defy day. ;)

Cheers for all the responses guys. The black ones don't look too bad but I reckon I prefer them being the same colour as the car.

Did somebody say checker plate? Here's my baby at Barrington Tops last weekend. Only the wing tops and rear quarter panels were in my original plan. The checker plate on the doors was unplanned...

I think on most vehicles you need to have either black or silver. The only time it looks good to have colour coded/same colour as vehicle is on a black one.
Here is mine....just had them done.

I tend to agree about the black or sliver being the best options. Any other colour and you'll get shadows from the texture stuffing up the colour no matter how well you manage to match the colour. Any graphics on the vehicle also influence the decision. I reckon that black would not have been a good look on my county due to the blue graphics. Also here's a pic of my Puma before I "had to" add the checker plate on the doors thanks to a trip to Yalwal. For the record, I cut out my own checker plate for the county using stock that I bought at Bunnings. By sliding a sheet of project cardboard under the rear flares I was able to trace an accurate line for the cut which I painstakingly did with a Dremel.
The checker plate on my Puma's doors in a previous post was also cut out manually and then powder coated by a local company for $40.
In the photos, my wife is driving the Puma and I'm driving the county. All of the pics below were taken on Stockton Beach (NSW) on the same day.

Does it have to be chequerplate?
For those with vehicles that black won't suit and don't want raw Al, any reason not to use plain Al sheet cut to fit and painted/coated, particularly for the side panels?
I can only see the tread pattern being useful on the bonnet/mudguards. Does the production process to make chequerplate vary from plain sheet which gives it more suitable qualities?

but somehow I don't think the Puma looks good just with the fender tops. I'm going to have to get the bonnet protector as well

Hi guys,
I'm just about to fit my chequer plate wing tops. Do you sikaflex them down aswell or just rivnuts? Thanks Sooly :(

Once you've drilled holes in your panels and bolted them on there's not many reasons to remove them. So sikaflex or not. I've seen some with a thin foam underlay. Some use pop rivets. It's all Landy Stylin'!

Black on white, but I had mine powdercoated.
Colour was Bass, it's a very dark grey textured finish so you don't get the glare
Made the templates up myself, took them into a fella and he cut it all out for me. For the wingtops, bonnet, side of bonnet and sills it cost the same as a genuine set of wingtops :p
